VW Passat drives 2,000km on a single tank of petrol

I feel being able to arbitrarily extend the size of your petrol tank takes some of the difficulty out of seeing how far you can drive on a single tank of petrol.

How did they manage to get an extra 17L into the tank? Surely there isn't that amount of extra capacity in the pipes and whatnot? Was this an unmodified tank?

Lol, we all wondering the same thing.

In that case, I'm taking out the back seats of my Polo, filling it with a moerse fuel tank and claiming I drove to Egypt on one tank :whistling:

Now tell us what the average CO2 emissions were :whistling:

4.1l per 100km is not that exceptional with mainly highway mileage.

It is easy if you put in a biggentank, and drive like there's eggs on the gas pedal...

Would love to know how they "modified" the standard fuel tank to allow overfill of 15l...

I don't doubt they got 4.1 l/100km - those tsi engines are frugal. I once got 4.3 using cruise control at a steady 100km/h. But them not using the standard tank just negates the whole exercise.

Plans and techniques used included cooling the fuel down as much as possible by leaving the jerry cans covered in cloth on the grass next to the swimming pool at the resort where we stayed in Messina.

We then soaked the grass and cloth with water and let nature do its course with temperatures near freezing point in the early morning.

Just like an alcohol thermometer, petrol and diesel contracts or expands with temperature change.

Our aim was to contract it as much as possible before filling the fuel tank.

Tyre pressures are set at the absolute maximum recommended level to minimise the rolling resistance of the car.

Another trick used was parking the car on a slope with the filler cap at the highest point to get as much fuel as possible into the tank.

But your average motorist won't do that - it is stop, fill up, and go. And maintain correct tyre pressure (hopefully).... and try to go as fast as possible without the traffic police noticing.

So it's not a real life everyday scenario then? What normal person would go through all of this before setting off on a trip. Normal people fill up at the pumps and set off.

As in the past they were overwhelmingly co-operative and, at one stage, even gave us an unexpected police escort through a repair section!

I want to see real world results. All good and fine in going to extremes to minimize fuel consumption, but let's be honest - how many motorists will drive the way these guys did?
