What does your temperature gauge usually show? Does it stay at 50, or usually go up to 90?

I ask because my car's temperature used to stay around 50 and didn't go much higher. I took in in recently to check on the fanbelt and run a diagnostic to see if there were any issues. The temperature is now going up to 90 every day. Reading up on this online shows that it's probably normal, so my thermostat might have been off before and they re-calibrated it when they checked out my engine. But it is unusual, so cause for some worry for me (although everything seems to be fine...). Just wanted to check what your experience has been so I know what the norm is.

Car details: VW Polo 1.6 2006.

Temp. gauge has 50, 90 and 130 on the left, middle and right respectively, right? If so, then yes... 90 is normal operating temperature. If the gauge was reporting an accurate reading, it means your car's engine never reached optimal temps... not good.

Don't think there's much chance of a thermostat being recalibrated either. Either it was replaced, or the issue was elsewhere.

As above.. there's no way it should have ever been 50 (assuming its running :erm:)

Always been 90 on time, 2007 GTI, it was probably not connected or something if it use to stay on 50 ;) There is a warning light thing if the coolant is too low, so that would probably have been on if there was a heat problem.

Mine is a golden oldie VW Polo Playa. Also always stays in the middle...but it does not have temps so dont know how hot that is. Only time it went over half way was when the car overheated with me on my way home the next day the panel beater replaced my radiator after my little accident. They forgot to plug in the fan! BASTADS! :p

All cars must be at 90.
Always drive slow till the oil temp is 90 then drive faster.

So it is now normal. Great. Exactly what I needed to hear so I can stop worrying about it.

It's been driving fine for the last 5 years, so I suspect it was perhaps not connected as BrokenLink said. Although you'd think several services and a cambelt replacement later, VW would have picked it up

no it doen't come on,only if i turn aircon on yeah

That is a common issue. the fan is reasonably priced (goldwagen) and easy to replace.

On the temp issue. In my days of driving I have owned and/or driven a number of VWs - 90 is normal. The reason for the car staying at 50 is that there are a couple of different Solenoid type gates on the water line and one of them must be defective hence the correct temperature water not being allowed to run over the thermostat sensor.

What is the point of this complication?
