Hi All

I drive a 2006 Renault Clio three that I am selling. The reason for the sale is because the car service, parts and maintenance are expensive.

My replacement shortlist is VW Polo, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Getz or Opel Corsa Gamma.

Which car from my shortlist is reliable, low on fuel consumption and has low service costs?

I stay in Fourways JHB and work in Arcadia PTA. From home to work I drive 100km return. The car has to be reliable.

My budget is 50k – 60k.

go for the polo , spare parts are in abundance and with companies like goldwagen quite cheap for generic parts. go for the 1.4i

Corsa or Polo in my IMHO . Ive got a 2006 1.4 Corsa. I do about 200km a day and it is fairly frugal and the only thing to go wrong is a faulty flasher unit, even the Willard battery lasted 8 years. and my GF has a 1.4 polo which has been relatively trouble free. You can get parts for both cars from Goldwagen. Getz interior quality is not great and the car has as much character as a lump of coal. I wouldn't touch another Ford product after my ex wife's Fiesta ownership fiasco.

Driven them all, polo wins by miles.

And then it gets stolen (even quicker than usual in Arcadia).

I'd say get the Ford if you can get one in a good condition, but with your budget it might be a stretch, otherwise the Hyundai (looks wasn't taken into account).

Ford Fiesta of course. Fiesta & Getz is slightly more fuel efficient than Polo unless you can find a decent TDI but then it depends on which model or generation. According to Kingsley Reports the Fiesta and Getz is cheaper to maintain than Polo, this only applies to older generation models, not new, newer generations are different. If you want a super reliable, go for Honda Ballade or Toyota Tazz

Either the VW Polo or Ford Fiesta. Look at the petrol variants (1.4 fiesta or 1.4/1.6 polo) - its especially cheap and easy to find spares for the Polo, plus those older 1.4 and 1.6 engines are still made today.

I wouldn't really go for the turbo-diesel option - it could get costly to maintain and repair.

My wife had a choice of Polo, Fiesta, Getz, Micra and a few other small cars.
She chose the Fiesta, and is now on her second one in 5 years.
Fuel economy is good, feels solid and well put together, unlike some of the others.

Thank you for your replies.

I have been searching on autotrader, surf4cars, cars and other websites. What I have noticed is that for a clean VW Polo and Opel Corsa (2004 – 2010) with less than 150 000 km I have to increase my budget.

I found plenty of Getz and Fiestas within my budget that are in good condition.

Should I save more or go for the Getz or Fiesta?
