Try steer clear of VW if those control arm bushes do end up needing replacement, a mate of mine was just quoted R 28 900 for the right hand side control arm bushes and a clutch so I'm assuming the control arms were at least 10k of that total.

Might I suggest that your friend goes to someone else to fix his car!

There is no way in Hell, and a Month of Sundays that bushes could cost anything like that - I have just done engine mountings and gearbox mounting for R 1100.

The only way you can approach 28 k is a total motor rebuild +++

Check you facts.

I'm with you, I saw the total of the bill myself and like I said, steer clear of VW for this replacement, exorbitant labor costs are not unheard of from them. I remember one particular incident when my Mom's driver's side tweeter cover fell off when she closed the door on her 2003 Polo Classic, she was charged 4 grand and when we got the car back the replacement cover had been prestick'd on!

Chris, I am sorry, but I spent years in the Motor Industry and if VW were charging anything like this they would have been shut down.

I am not saying that you are lying, just saying that you are perhaps leaving certain things off, that would build up to bills like this.

We did my brother's complete front end on his Jetta in January, and it is very similar to the Polo, and that, including new discs and pads, came to R 1900. I replaced a drive shaft and did the brakes all round on my Jetta, and including the engine and gearbox mountings that I mentioned earlier, I was still under R 2500.

Are you certain that the 4k charged to your mom, didn't include something else, like a cambelt change, or major service and brakes, whilst they also re-fitted the tweeter cover?

Hi Guys, had a look at the Polo today. Is it normal for a fuel consumption of about 14 km/l for a 2005 model , 74kw 1.9 TDI.

I owned the 2007 TDi 1.9 (loved it,miss it) and got roughly 7l/100km in town. Seems on par with your figure. On the highway you should be getting about 5l/100km (20k/l) depending on how heavy your foot is.

I didn't read the whole thread but the guys are correct about the 2005 model (two rounded headlights) being notorious for turbo failures. If I was you i would look for so fetching else just for the peace of mind.

That's a bit high, but it depends on how it was driven to get to that figure. You should be able to go into the low 4s or even down to 3.8 L/100km (between 23 and 26 km/l) when using the instantaneous consumption display at 100 km/h on a level road. If you're not used to a diesel, it can also contribute to higher consumption. My brother's consumption average dropped by 2 L/100km once he got used to the car, mine dropped by about 1.

Only way I ever got below 4 was driving from JHB to PTA without traffic at 90km/h.

I also figure it was maybe around town that low consumption. Maybe it will go down op the open road. Could it be faulty injectors?
Didn't the 2005 model (Round lights) 74 kw use the same turbo and engine as the 2006/7 models?

Can't answer that. Point is I heard about the turbo issues back in 2009 already when I bought mine.

Nothing wrong with that consumption in town - you will get it lower out on the freeway.

Stop looking for problems! :p

Turbos were all sorted out with a factory recall, so I don't know whey people are still getting hysterical.

Im used to petrol engines, TDI is something to get used to, first time driving a TDi today, must say... LOVING the POWER! adrenaline pumping. You can only imagine since im driving a 1.4i Polo 2004 model. Consumption on my petrol polo is 16-17.5 km/l.

If it was driven like a rental then forget it, but if it was looked after I dont see why not.
