The Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) will invest over R4.5 billion to produce at least two new models at its plant in Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape.

The investment will take its production capacity from the current 116 000 vehicles per annum to over 150 000 units by 2017. The South African automotive manufacturing industry has experienced a tough couple of years amid extended periods of strike action, cost pressures, a lack of economies of scale and electricity constraints. Against this background, several auto executives have warned that the environment makes the country unattractive to attract contracts from a global perspective.

Those Polo ute rumours must be true!

VW would have a real winner on their hands if they build them. The price will probably make them 'lifestyle bakkies', but there's more money to be made on those workhorses. Plus, as a workhorse, it won't beat the NP200.
