It all depends where VWSA wants to position the Up! in the market. My guess is that because they have the Vivo and they will milk it to the end of time (like the Citi) they will keep the Up! somewhere between the Vivo and Polo. Unlike Europe where the Up! is the cheapest entry level VW we have the Vivo here, add to that some similarly sized competition like the Adam and 500 which are way more up market by the way, and VWSA has a cheap small car they can sell at a high price. The South Africa car buyer is one of the stupidest around and they will easy believe the Up! is competition for the Adam or 500.

The pricing's right there in the OP? :erm: :p

Up! is positioned below Vivo, if only slightly. VWSA will want to protect the Vivo market because it is locally produced, but I think that is going to prove quite the challenge...

At least ABS and aircon aren't on the options list any more, and it's hardly limited to VW. New car prices are generally a bit mental.

In that light I would take the Up! before I take a Vivo. Power output is the same but the engine is a million times more advanced.

I actually think that this is a great little car. Way better than the overpriced, watered down version of a previous gen car known as the Vivo...

I currently drive a 1.2lt Spark but if I wanted to get a new car the Up! might be up there especially if the engineering is like my old Polo.

That little three potter 1l engine kicks out the same power a 1.4 Vivo engine. That is what I consider remarkable.

I must be missing something. The 1.4 Vivo Trendline produces 63kw and 132Nm whereas the Up! produces 55kW and 95Nm. 95nm?? Even the horrid Datsun Go has more torque than that!
You want a remarkable engine, check out Ford's 1L EcoBoost. 92Kw and 175Nm. 1.0L???

Still remember Clarkson running out of petrol in Pripyat in the "Up exclamation mark". :)

You forgot the Vivo Concept[-]panty[/-]line

Well I guess it was detuned for better fuel consumption. Still a trunkload more torque on the Vivo.

I'm guessing there's going to be a lot of stirring of the gear lever and plenty of pedal-to-the metal driving in the city, just to keep upto pace with that 3-cylinder.

Detuning a motor doesn't give it better consumption. If anything it's likely to increase the consumption.

Not according to VW. The 55kw does 5.4l/100km and the 63kw does 6.2l/100km

Cute car. Crap price.
FYI - The UK model starts at £7,995 - about R135 000.

Sorry, but what is your point? The UK price is HIGHER than in SA!!

I am delighted that it has finally been released here! VW has missed a true baby for too long!

I drove one.. I would never ever ever put my money down to buy one... the test drive was enough for me to know that its a crap car.

Yes it may be put together well, and it may not break down or any of those things, but its a monumentally crap drive.

I'm genuinely interested what you base this one. Haven't driven one, so I'm quite intrigued. As the Youtube reviews I've seen (incl Fifth Gear), all rate it pretty high.

What does the Ford 1L EcoBoost cost?

The steering was vague for a new car.. The gearbox was decidedly not crisp enough.. The car was sluggish in comparison to its rivals.
