Hi all

We're trying to help out a poor and frail 90 year old by getting his machine up and running. Caps on mobo are all swollen, at this stage it seems like it'll be uneconomical to repair, and there is the uncertainty that it'll even work.

He needs a new SATA hard drive, any capacity will do. And an LGA775 945/G31/G41 etc. motherboard, hopefully with DDR2 slots.

Perhaps someone out there has one lying around, and can 'pay it forward'.

Otherwise just name your fair price. We're not making anything out of it, and it's truly a good deed.

Wishing upon a star. Thanks in advance. :)

Item wanted (be very descriptive): LGA775 motherboard with DDR2 RAM slots
Is packaging essential?: No
Desired age and condition: Anything
Location: Anywhere in SA
Willing to accept a shipped item: Yes

I'm pretty sure I've got a drive lying around somewhere, if so its probably a 80gb sata. I'm out the country next week and quite busy tomorrow so if its still needed when I get back I'll be happy to donate it.

Thank you. The old boy is desperate, so something available sooner is first prize. Unless I can send a courier tomorrow?

I've got a board/chip and drive. I tested the board a day or two ago, for another forumite who was looking for an LGA 775 - I could not get it to boot, but that may have quite possibly been me being idiotic.

Point being, you are welcome to all of it, to see if any of it might assist. :)

Only niggle is that it's DDR 3, and my only extraneous chip appears to also be broken.

Let me know...

Thanks, pal. Could you please describe the symptoms when attempting to boot?

Nothing happens. At all.

This was me attaching it to my existing power supply. Prior to that it'd been quite happily working when last I used it about five months ago.

Sounds like there could be hope... Another forumite has kindly donated a mobo, CPU and RAM.

I also appear to have a 200GB drive on my shelf...

HDD sorted, perhaps put this aside for the next 'pay it forward'. :)

You know I am now very pissed off for only seeing this now. On Thursday I threw away a G31 board, 2gig ddr2 RAM and a 350 PSU just because I thought it would just gather dust in a cupboard somewhere.

Sorry about that man but if I saw this earlier I would have brought you the whole lot.

Goodluck and thanks for helping the guy out.

No worries bud, I'm sure someone needy will still receive your parts nonetheless.

Just had the old boy on the phone. Burst into tears when I told him we're fixing up his PC for free.

He went on to tell me how his eldest son has just taken him for R2 mil through a property that was put in his name... Nothing in writing so very little legal recourse... Almost had me in tears too. Can't believe money comes between blood like that...

I would like to thank these forumites from the bottom of our hearts:

Pho3nix - CPU, mobo and RAM
Zuner - hard drive

You absolute biscuits! :)
