Wabona on-demand video beta available in SA

DSTV 'Gon get raped.
Mind you, they already are getting shafted up the pooper by downloaders

Great to see these distribution methods taking foot in SA.

Sadly I have no interest in the content they aim to provide.

Hopefully they will expand at some point.

I didn't want to sign up just to see how much it is to rent an episode.

Does anybody know what the price is?

It's mentioned in the article: "At the time of writing the site offered rentals at a flat price of $1.50 per title for 72 hours, regardless of whether it was a feature-length film or 20-minute sitcom episode."

Skimmed over that bit, sorry :erm:

That means that season 1 of Suburban Bliss is $34.5 ~ R308.

Titles such as the South African sitcom Suburban Bliss, and films Paramour and By the Numbers were available for rent on Wabona. Other local series available include Yizo Yizo, Tsha Tsha, and Gaz’lam.

Do not want!

If you watch one series once a week.

Well, thats the nature of most TV shows. One episode is aired a week.
And at $6 a month per show, it is a lot cheaper than satellite, unless you watch dozens of shows per month

Netflix charges a $8 a month (if I'm not mistaken) for unlimited streaming and offer far more content. This is a VERY expensive offering.

There are a lot of good shows available - http://www.pogdesign.co.uk/cat/

Services like Hulu Plus which have a monthly fee make more sense for series. Hulu Plus also offers many classic movies and I think movies from Miramax. This is $8/month.

Netflix is also $8-10/month and you have a large selection of movies and series.

I hope Wabona succeeds. We need quality VOD in SA. I think Wabona needs to expand its available content in order to succeed and maybe look at their pricing on certain content. I just don't think anybody would pay $1.50 for an episode of Suburban Bliss.

Netflix is old c**p. I know, as I have Netflix.
It pales in comparison to VOD services

Hulu Plus is for current series (except HBO, etc) and Netflix/LoveFilm/Amazon Prime are for movies - once they have gone to dvd/bluray.

Vudu/Google Play/Amazon Instant Video are proper VOD services and apparently work pretty well. (and iTunes I suppose)

Talking about this stuff just makes me sad because we won't have it for quite a while.

pushplay.co.za were meant to launch something in partnership with Netflix, but that never happened. And we'll have to wait and see about these guys.

InfoView.tv looked promising, but in the beta I joined it was hit and miss and not everything was available/working.

SouthTel have gone to ground: http://mybroadband.co.za/news/broadcasting/47046-southtel-mum-on-failure-to-launch.html. Even received a phone call from a previous partner this week saying that their telephone numbers no longer work and if I know of a way to get in touch with them.

Will have to see if anything about them surfaces from AfricaCom/AfricaCast.

Pity. I hope they take off. Thusfar Wabona is the only non-MultiChoice, ecosystem-agnostic online video content service for SA that looks like it might actually deliver. We won't get Game of Thrones though them, but there have been some solid local series and films that I might be pursuaded to get from them.

I would like a download option, though. Don't know how feasible that is in the realm of film & video where copyright holders insist on DRM. Usually it means yet another third-party downloader/viewing app, which also sucks.

Will you pay R300 for a box set of Suburban Bliss? That's what it boils down to.

Not quite. Wabona is a rental service. A full season box set usually costs more than R300 though, doesn't it?
