Slow Internet speeds in South Africa — break in undersea cables

The West African Cable System (WACS) and the South Atlantic 3 (SAT–3) undersea cables have experienced breaks impacting connectivity to South Africa, MyBroadband has learned.

Two well-placed sources who asked not to be identified because they aren’t authorised to speak to media provided details about the incident.

I'm having major issues connecting to anyone who uses CloudFlare. Ironically, it's taken EliteHost's site down but mine (which is hosted with EH) is up xD

Have you guys noticed anything speed wise? Still seems okay.
Last night around 11pm my Afrihost connection kept pausing videos and breaking web pages halfway through. This morning before 8am it was patchy at best. Much better this evening. Thought it was load-shedding on the fiber nodes, timing seemed right for that at the time.

10 maybe 15 years ago this would have been the end of the internet in SA. I am sure there is a free thread necro of a few times we had this if the necro people want to actually necro something relvant.

Anyone got tests or similar which can be run to see the impact of the breaks?

Hi

At 8:45 am this morning we decided to remove one of the transit providers that doesn't have enough capacity on alternative cables as it was causing quite a bit of packet loss. After that change, things are looking much better all around albeit with the higher latency.
