As the heading says.

I'm looking to build an F1 Replica with a car engine. Would just be for fun and to keep me entertained for a while :p. Been trying to find some blue prints or the frame used for F1 cars just to get some idea of what i need to do....

No luck with that. I can't promise you it will turn out to look like one but worth a shot none the less. Might just put in a 1300 turbo motor or something in it to mess around with me and the laaitjie.

They use carbon fibre monocoque chassis, so don't have a frame per se. Good luck though!
Edit - Wouldn't attempting something like an Ariel Atom be more practical?

I want to build the chasis for the engine, seat and wheel assembly. Around that I'll do Fibreglass+Steel sheeting to make it the shape of a formula1 car.

Making it look like an F1 is easy, but getting that done over a frame built from my head might just kill me with frustration :D I'll try and find the measurements of the car online somewhere. Maybe some dimetions and try and get a frame going from there.

That's some project Pitbull. haha.

Well, you should be able to weld up a frame pretty easily. What are you going to do about the body? You'll need to use fiberglass for the body.

As for the engine, I don't know, but I'd suggest using a beetle transaxle. This way you can mount the engine easily at the rear with an adapter plate. You'd have to custom make two radiators to put in the two holes you'd have to have on each side.

Interesting, would be cool to have some blueprints though... I know someone in Boksburg who does fiberglass...

Think of it as a hobby that should keep me rather busy for the next 2 or so years :). Doing it part time and have my laaitjie help with it from start to finish. It should still be able to fit on a Car trailer though for taking out to a strip somewhere.

That would be brilliant :) But a project of this nature will take a pretty long time though . I'll start so long by buying the parts for the frame once I have some measurements in place. Thinking of using a 1300 Golf motor or 1600 Beetle motor as suggested by V (Because they are cheap to maintain :p)

Beetle motor would be perfect, then you don't need to stress about cooling. It will be plenty powerful because that car won't weigh anything. You can put twin carbs on it.

F1 cars are 2 wheel drive right?

That will cause me a little headache ....

A rotary would be nice in there too. Would aid in getting to that authentic sound :p

And yes, they're two wheel drive

That's why I'm saying use the beetle gearbox/rear axle. It is built for a rear engine, 2 wheel drive set up. No modification required. Cheap to get too.

You could even look at using a beetle chassis. Many a kit car is based on it...

...mmm... Rotary would be brilliant, and they are small and light also. I can do a dual Rotary system which should be just under 1300 around 1275cc with a Turbo :D

But to get it to pull on both wheels through the gearbox might be a mission. I'll have to see what kind of a gearbox will have to be used. I want to have the engine in the back by the wheels, however for me to run it on both wheels I'll have to run it vertically through a diff to have it engaged in 2 wheel drive ...

Still not a problem though, I can use a 1400 Nissan diff just shorten the driveshaft. But this will make the shaft a hell of a lot weaker :(

Yes

Think I'll start with a beetle engine just to get an idea of how things will fit into place. Running a rotary at 9000 RPM would make the replica sound like an F1 though. That would be great, but to have that setup built will take ages/massive amounts of patience and damn hard work :D

Well, they drop 13B rotaries into beetles with relative ease, so if you can fit a beetle engine, then you should be able to do the same with the rotary. I'd phone someone who do such conversions and find out exactly what's involved, as I don't think it's as complex as you think it is.
