So for R13999 I am seriously considering selling my Macbook (last white unibody one) and getting this. . . seems like a good time to buy the old MBP.

I had a 2011 MacBook Pro that I upgraded to 16GB RAM and a 256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD. I wasn't using it much because I preferred my MacBook Air and sold it earlier this year for R4500. I think that was a good deal at the time even though finding similar spec Retina Display MacBook Pro will cost me something ridiculous.

The only problem with laptops that are 3years + old is the battery will have reached the end of it's lifetime. I assume it's the same for macbooks...

Probably if you ran the battery flat every day. Apple says 1000 cycles should give you 80% of the original designed battery life.

The battery was in good shape when I sold it. However, replacing is not very difficult or that expensive relatively speaking. It's a $100 from iFixit.com. Can be found cheaper elsewhere.

Would an older macbook pro (2010, 2011) be suitable for doing Java development.

I've seen ads like these:

Mac book pro 2011
Macbook Pro 15" laptop 2.53 GHz Core i5 processor 4GB 1067 MHZ DDR3 Ram Nvidia GeForce GT 330m 256mb Screen res 1440x900 This laptop has served me well an is freshly cleaned and ready for a new owner. R5500
