Hallo Ladies and Gentlemen

My computer has given me problems for a few days and am tired of trying to fix it so I am upgrading

I am student so my budget is very low. It is about R6000 I have available for those 3 components that I can take out off my pocket. I have been searching Takealot.com and got all the hardware their ( I want to buy from one place makes it easier to get and also delivery is cheap )
and this is what I got

This is option 1:

Gigabyte GA-B85M-HD3 Motherboard - Socket LGA1150 R 1,006
Intel Core i5 4570 3.20Ghz Socket 1150 Processor R 2,499
2x Transcend JetRam - 4GB DDR3 1333 MHz - Desktop Memory ( x2 R 529 ) R 1,058
Dell S2240L- 21.5inch LED Monitor R 1,891 ( I still own a VGA screen so I can fit this in my budget not necessary )

Total: R6 454

Option 2:

Gigabyte P75-D3 - Discrete Motherboard - Socket 1155 R 1,121
Intel Boxed Core i5 3570K - 3.40GHz Quad Core - Socket 1155 CPU R 2,999

or

Intel Boxed Core i7 3770 - 3.40GHz Quad Core - Socket 1155 CPU R 3,920
2x Transcend JetRam - 4GB DDR3 1333 MHz - Desktop Memory ( x2 R 529 ) R 1,058

Total: R 5,178 ( Core i5 ) or R 6,099 ( Core i7 )

If you can recommend other components and any other shop I am fine with it.
I want to upgrade end off January and I don't know PC hardware that well.

My PC specs at the moment:
I don't know the exact names.

CPU: Intel Core 2 duo 3.06ghz
RAM: 4 Gb DDR2
MOBO: PCI ( I cant remember the code but it is very old )
GPU: Nvidea Geforce 550 Ti
PSU: 600 Watt ( I think it is 600 watt might be 800 watt )

Thank You for your time

My 5 cents...

CPU: i5 4670 3.4Ghz Quad R2700
RAM: 8gig 2133Mhz GSKILL Memory R999
MOBO: ASRock Z87 R1299
GPU: Nvidea Geforce 550 Ti (Keep for now) or get a something like a AMD 7850 for 1.8k or so for a decent gaming rig.
PSU: 600watt (keep)

Total less than R5k and you could probably get the parts cheaper.

Monitor Dell ISP 24" 1080 R2300 inc.

Prices taken from well knows like wootware/landmarkpc etc...

GL mate.

What kind of issues are you experiencing?

I would first try to determine what is the cause: PSU/HDD/RAM/Motherboard/CPU - also most likely in the order that I mentioned.

I won't recommend going for anything less than a Haswell i5, unless you're going for a secondhand Ivy Bridge i5 3570(k)/i7 setup.

Also take note that you'll need a new Windows license, unless you had a non-DSP license. If you're a student studying at a University/Technicon, then you can most likely obtain a Windows 8 Pro x64 license for next to nothing.

You can also check out comx.co.za, don't know if they're cheaper than takealot though

Hallo guys just want to thank you for the replies

To adam_G

The problem with saving is that I need to get money to save. My work ends at the end of January then I return to the University in Potchefstroom the next time I start working is March vacation and I am so sick off my problem I would rather fix it now then save more on upgrades for my PC in the future but thank you. I have to say you actually made me do some rethinking on that hardware

To Ry4n:
I am going to have a look at that hardware you recommended thank you very much.

To Pada:

I will look into the Haswell i5 but I have no idea what does Ivy bridge mean but I will do my homework, thank you very much.

To vicv:

Thank you I went on esquire as well saw that their prices is a lot lower then Takealot will be sure to look at your website

Regarding my problem if you don't want to read it it is understandable just skip it, I started the thread for hardware :

here is a link with a full description to my problem

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1922511/black-problem-gaming.html

If your a lazy reader

While I game my game freezes up and the screen turns black for a while leaving the game to sometimes crash following with a warning message telling me my drivers crashed.

I did update everything and even downloaded older drivers which actually extended the time before the "black out". People suggested that it is my CPU because my GPU is to powerful for it others say its a driver problem. My dad told me to get the CD that came with my GPU and install that drivers since he had a similar problem but I cant find my box. This has been going over for a year

Thank you guys for all your replies I really appreciate it.
Happy New Year :D

Could also be your power supply. Maybe it cant supply enough power when you're gaming. Just my 2c

I replaced my power supply because I thought it might be the problem but nothing changed. I am going to take my GPU to my brother after work and take his we have the same GPU which is nice.

Have you monitored your GPU temperatures?
My guess is that your graphics card has been running hot for a couple of years now and requires a reflow to work properly again.

Swapping it out with your brother's graphics card is most certainly the best test.

Ok so I did test it returned his card about 5 min ago just before 12 o'clock so i am tired. The bad news is it is my GPU might have gotten hot. I monitored the temps before and it looked fine. Maybe it wasnt fine a year ago then it got hurt also my computer moves a lot at least once every three months because I come home and go back to University. What is this reflow that you are talking about.

Sad news indeed was hopping it would be my cpu I really wanted to get rid of my dinosaurs

Thank you

Okay so YouTube was my friend I now know what reflow is and that gave some hope. I understand everything the guy did I just have 2 questions

Question 1: I don't own thermal paste and the place I stay at does not have any as well. I went on a search for it because I thought my CPU overheated. Is it necessary to reapply or can I skip that part ?

Question 2: The video I watched the guy used a advanced tool for this kind off thing can I use a hair dryer ?

Pada if this works it is safe to say you are a hardware genius not even internationals could have helped me. Leave it to the South-Africans to solve this problem ( I really hope you are an South-African ).

Thanks guys

Francois

EDIT: Here is the link to the video I watched

Stellenbosch (which I mention in my profile) is in South Africa... :)

The hairdryer isn't even or nearly hot enough to perform the reflow operation. You can do it using a heatgun like what the guy used in that youtube video that you posted.

I actually did a reflow of a 8800GTX a couple of years ago, by using an oven - but I cannot recommend you do it in one that will still be used for cooking food in, due to the lead/other poisonous fumes. My reflow attempt was successful and it did get rid of the artifacts that I saw during the POST screen already!

Thermal paste is always a handy thing to have if you like to do your own computer maintenance - and it sounds to me like you sort of know how to do that kind of stuff. You don't need the most expensive thermal paste, unless you're going to overclock your components very far! It is more important to apply the thermal paste correctly than to buy expensive thermal paste.

How old is your graphics card? If it is a Gigabyte/Asus/MSI one, then it may still be under warranty and then I'd suggest you RMA it instead.

Another thing that you can try is simply to raise the GPU voltage slightly using MSI Afterburner. I've seen countless times that manufacturers sell factory overclocked graphics cards and then they didn't increase the voltage enough, and then you also end up getting those kind of issues that you're having. I cannot guarantee that it would solve the problem, but I have seen cases where either raising the GPU voltage or downclocking the GPU speed fixed the issue on factory OC cards.
Like with my GTX460OC, I increased its voltage (by 0.037V) from 0.975 to 1.012, which allowed me to stably overclock it even further without increasing the heat too much.

The funny part is that the thread started out as a hardware recommendation.
Thanks for all the information. I am in good luck that I am at home because we have a heatgun.
It is a gigabyte GPU but I can't seem to find the package of the GPU so returning it is a no go.
Also the GPU is I think it is a year or a year and 6 months old. I can't remember when the problem started I know it started around the release date of Skyrim. I wanted to play the game and I kept getting a black screen. I have posted my problem a year ago and recently on Tom's Hardware.

I am going on vacation from Saturday until Tuesday. I will pick up some thermal paste their then I will test the reflow.
When I start the process how warm does it need to be or what is the time i should heat it up ? I will try and set the voltage as well after work.

Hopefully this helps otherwise it wont be a new CPU/MOBO/RAM I will be buying it would be a new video camera and graphics card. The video camera will be used to record me smashing the old GPU ( I just kid ). I don't know why but I think after the reflow it might work.

Thank you again so much.

AMD FX 8350 looks pretty good for a gaming rig.

Good video I enjoyed it knowing that the AMD did a well job. I want to see how it performs against the Intel Core i7. Once again thank you for your help
