Do your son a favour and get him a DS Lite. He'll have more fun with that than a PSP.

The DS Lite is Nintendo's handheld and it's selling something like 5-1 worldwide compared to the PSP. There are some really fun and unique titles for the DS and it's cheaper than a PSP.

Someone was selling a PSP for about 1200

Someone was selling a PSP for about 1200 with lots of extras - look under off topic or gaming over the past three days or so.
BTW Bluecollar - what is a DS vs DS Lite?

The DS Lite is a little skinnier and better looking than a DS, and it has better quality screens with brighter backlights.

Go for a psp!!! the better option!!! your kid can browse the internet(if you have a wifi router), play online multiplayer games, mp3 player and have a collection of photo's & movies with him....... the psp is actually not for kids once you use it you'll notice......

Umm... you can do pretty much all that with a DS Lite too. To me there must be a reason why the DS Lite is dominating the market and the PSP is struggling to even stay alive.

Probably has something to do with the huge price difference. I don't really know of all the feature of a DS but I saw 2 screens too, one being a touch screen. If the DS can do all the things that the psp can then I will say that there is no real competition, the DS will win hands down!

Uh, yeah along with having free access to pornography without parental supervision? No thanks!

The DS lite rules for games and gameplay, it's also a cheaper purchase and the games are a lot cheaper as well. Just for comparison, these are recent Japanese sales stats
http://forums.prophecy.co.za/f65/japanese-console-sales-stats-31420/

The DS-Lite hardware sells 5x or more that of the PSP, but even more damning is to look at the games sales, 7/10 of the top ten games are for the DS. (it's a bad week there's usually more ;) )

I just sold my PSP with 3 games for R1300. Have a look on bidorbuy, there are sometimes good deals to be had there!

i think SA is a bit of a oddity cos these DS Lite things are a bit scarce. Makro does not even keep it or games for it - but they a full up with the PSP stuff .... what gives?

I also have yet to see this machine in action ... from the reviews on the net ... it seems really awesome.....

I must agree with everyone so far on this thread:

Rather get him a DS Lite. I know he is expecting a PSP, but after the initial shock wears off and he starts playing games like New Super Mario Bros, Animal Crossing Wild World and Mario Kart, he'll love you forever.

The PSP just doesn't have the games to compete with the DS Lite. And your kid will probably not be in to homebrew, so there really is no reason to own a PSP. The games and the system is more expensive than the DS Lite.

If your kid wants to watch movies, view photos or listen to music, get him an Ipod in stead. It's miles ahead of the PSP anyway. But if your kid wants to play games, get him a DS Lite.

A warning though: Being a Nintendo owner is South Africa is hard work. You're going to have to buy most of your games online or at special "gaming" shops like Animeworx or BT Games. So far, most of my Nintendo consoles and games were bought from Animeworx. Take2.co.za is also well stocked of Nintendo products and since the DS Lite is region free, they can even import you US or UK versions of the game if the South African supplier doesn't have stock.
