Just received this from Axxess technical support (on a 2MB account):

Hi (DJ...)

I have had a look at your account and I see you have done 36.7 GB on the account so far this month, putting the account in a managed state as per our AUP.

How on earth can 36 gigs qualify as abuse on their network? I can't download now because they consider 1 to 2 Blu Ray movie downloads to be abuse.

Is it only Axxess who have such atrocious AUPs or are other ISPs just as bad as this? I cannot for the life of me fathom how anyone could be worse...

I don't see them mentioning 'abuse' anywhere. Maybe you misread their email?

If you don't like their AUP you should move on to a provider who has a different AUP?

I'm almost constantly "managed" but its okay. I've done 58gigs this month which is much higher than my normal usage since I had 3 computers streaming Netflix for family that stayed over long weekend and I updated all my steam games. What I can say is that even in the "managed" state we can still stream movies perfectly fine :)

This means nothing if you don't mention your account speed...

When an account is throttled/managed, the non-geek in me couldn't give a flying fsck what they want to call it. It is a reaction to what they clearly deem excessive usage of their account.

I was in fact lead to believe that Axxess didn't shape certain traffic but instead managed their entire network load or something to that effect.

Personally, 36 gigs is an atrocious cut-off level and they can go get stuffed. I was convinced to move over from their 50 gig capped account which was fantastic. This uncapped nonsense is ridiculous though.

AUPs this pervasive do not allow for an uncapped experience imo...

My traffic wasn't streaming. Mine was torrent traffic and they've throttled all torrent traffic down to 10kB/s now...

Probably the same managed network level that Afrihost uses since Afrihost owns Axxess.
So your browsing and youtube won't be affected but downloads should get throttled.

36 gigs on a 2MB account equates to 108 hours. There are about 720 hours in a month. This means that using this account 15% of the time results in it being placed in a managed state.

This means that only 4 and a half days in a 30 day month are allowed for actual use of this account.

Anything in excess is considered excessive, or whatever the hell they want to call it. I say this is them imposing punitive restrictions on my account, in which case it must be considered abuse...

Yes its a play on words everyone knows that you're not the first person in the world born with half a brain cell. Whats more important is what you're experiencing on the account are they restricting YOUR bandwidth requirements if they are move. I hear Mweb is much better for downloads I would move there if they didn't insist on debit orders.

I tested out quite a few ISPs before buying. Even posted a thread about it where I was singing Axxess' praises.

How on earth is a non-geek like myself, who simply wants an uncapped line to be able to do as he pleases within reasonable limits of course, supposed to know which ISP is best for which type of traffic.

Does this mean that Axxess are not the correct ISP if you plan to download stuff? Because of that's the case then it should be made abundantly clear, even if it is simply for the benefit of people reading this forum...

Even when I'm managed, everything else runs fine. Generally after hours(even when managed) things pick up as their is less load I am told. How bout queuing your torrents and scheduling them to run at night?

Eish...

I did 14GB this weekend on its own... 2 x Origin updates... total this month nearing 79GB on a 1Mbs line... no warnings, zero management etc.

Excessive on a 1Mbs line = more than 79GB thus far... will let you know when that milestone has been passed (I have never received any excessive type warning or anything in close on 2 years) ... I am on an OpenWeb Gold 1Mbs Uncapped account.

Wow I have to agree with DJ here... 36gb is not abuse, that is just totally retarded.

How on earth can you throttle someone with such low usage??? :wtf:

I'm on about 110gb for the month and I'm still in the green. Granted, I'm not with axxess.

Ai... Guess you get what you pay for?

One of these days uncapped will be R100 and you will be throttled after 10gb lol

As far as I can remember "managed" means they only slow down your torrents/p2p if you've been hammering it hard. Everything else remains untouched. They have to look after the network so that normal users do not get harmed by a few twits! ;)
