Lord flako, jail breaking allows you to do things not normally allowed by apple. For example, I have many iPads running point of sale in a retail environment. Jail breaking allows me to lock down the OS.

For me it's about changing the aesthetics of iOS...

I see. To each his/her own I suppose. Only reason I won't is that I have no intention of opening up risks of malware and such.

To each their own... but trust me, they come here later, when we've forgotten about this thread.. whingeing about how crap their iPhone is because it has now died or become bricked, or hacked. And they blame the cellphone networks when their calls are forever dropping, meanwhile its all the crap they hacked onto the device.

I do note though this sort of thing is very popular with those who hail from Durban. They do this to their Windows installations too, customize the thing to death and the thing harbours heaps of malware from all the "tools" and hacks they used to get it right.
They think its fun when it takes 2 minutes for the browser to load... because the CPU is perpetually maxed out running all that crap.

We have loads of carers with iPads which are locked down and they don't need to be jailbroken. They get the company email, messaging, the app to manage patient care, MS Office and that's about it.

Hey zippy, how do you do lock down the iPads ? Is it via an app or via apple deployment?

I think we use Sophos or something. I might be wrong, they switched a year ago. It's not something I personally get involved in. Only deal with one of the insurance apps. Our apps are built using the ios enterprise dev program which allows you build corporate apps without having to put your apps on the public stores. Does cost, which I guess is why people go the jailbreak route. However in the financial services industry on the UK we have to have proper support and licensing in place in order keep our FCA accreditation.

Slightly different environment here, dealing with spazas in townships :) jail breaking serves it's purpose, and quiet stable if you keep it simple

I have banking apps that won't work if I jailbreak. They don't work half the time anyway, but that's not the point.

Plus: You get Cydia and massive jizz in your pants you still have to pay for your apps? If you want to go through the headache just because you cant download Dom Raider on your 8ta non-lte just get an Android and wait a few months for the newest releases...
