So for me the question is why is SATMC lobbying for an increase in duties on imported tyres?

Means I very definitely won't be going to work if its raining thats for damned sure... all those slicks on the Freeways is gonna be fun.
My first car and during a Cape Town storm, I found out what aquaplaning is. Luckily, no accident. Next day bought new tyres. I bought the car a few months earlier at Used car dealership. LOL. So much wrong with the car. But lots of lessons learnt.

What exactly should South Africans do with this information?

That would be my guess as well... and in all honesty if they get it right, I will no longer buy tyres from any manufacturer that is a member of SATMC. They can go and fsck themselves. I will spend the extra money and make sure I get imported tyres.
Likewise. They are fscking with the free-market as opposed to rather insisting that all imported tyres comply with local safety standards.

Its not even necessarily fscking with the free-market per se..

If they have more stringent safety requirements to meet then they must insist that imported tyres meet the same standards of course, but also they must be more efficient if its purely a cost to produce angle that is hampering them.

Oh no, the tariff will apply to all types of tyres but at differing levels.

You can also expect things like Bike tyres to be higher since they're a "luxury" item if you're rich enough to have a bike :p

Easy. Just drive the car until the threads come out and tire burst. Then those cheap Chinese re-threaded tires are the way to go. They can keep that expensive tires to themselves.
