I have an important question. Sorry this is the 2nd thread on a similar topic but I want to know what's going on here and if MI Digital are in the right.

Get RROD. Phone Microsoft. Get reference number, they tell me from my serial number on my xbox that I still have some months left on my warranty. They tell me to take my ref number to retailer and get it swapped, don't need any Proof of Purchase.

Go to retailer. They don't know about this. I don't have proof of purchase so they won't swap because I don't have a slip. They don't know anything about Microsoft.

Microsoft advises to contact MI Digital. Contact MI Digital. They say they will instruct retailer to swap after I deposit R680 in their bank account for 'handling fees'.

I would happily pay R600 to get a new xbox, but I don't see WHY if the warranty clearly states that I have 3 years and Microsoft clearly tells me that I am still under this warranty and my serial number proves it and I shouldn't pay a cent.

Why?

I call Microsoft back and they tell me that it is illegal for them to charge me to swap it while it is still under the 3 year warrenty. My Xbox serial number proves that I have until October on my warrenty!

MI Digital claim you must pay this fee because you don't have a slip. I assume this means you pay it because you cannot prove that it is still under warranty.

But I can! My serial number shows my manufacture date as 2006, Microsoft tells me I have until October according to my serial number!

Are MI Digital in the wrong here or am I? Should I just tell them my reference number? Many people have been asking about this on different forums so please share your experiences with MI Digital and their policy on swapping.

You are right. MI Digital are wrong.

Your consoles is still under warranty and they need to sort that out. What some guys have done is to go into the store, gotten Microsoft and MI Digital on the phone and sorted it like that. I can't promise it'd work. :(

Give MI your reference number and if they still um and ah start going up the chain of command.

Okay. But I have a feeling they deliberately did not tell me I can check the manufacturing date via the serial number to make some easy cash. I will contact them tomorrow with my ref number and if they say no...

so if your new console RRoDs as well next week, will they want another R700?

In that case Martin, insist they give you one with HDMI.

@Imajin, shouldn't do, each "repair" unit carries a minimum 3 months Warranty.

I spoke to the manager of MI Digital and he said even if Microsoft says my XBOX comes form South Africa people can still fake it and I cannot prove it.. So I just paid the cash and got a new one. This time I'll be sure to keep my slip :p

I understand your frustration but I would have not given them money.

I have the same problem cannot find my slip and MI digital says I must pay them R680 . Spoke MS They say it is illegal , I Spoke to 1 of the managers at MS today and they gave me a second reference number and said they will call MI Digital directly ( PROMISED TO CALL ME 48HRS) .

In the interim I have remembered the date I purchased the unit for my son . Called my bank today and asked for statement on my credit card . The lady at FNB gave me the date of the transaction and the amount transfered to Look & listen .

I called look & listen and they found a copy of my slip dating nov 2006,this is good , but she claims that my unit is not guaranteed .MS said my unit is covered till september 2008 ,Well I will have to wait and see .

I hope this info helps someone.:

MI digital charge a handling fee if the console is imported or if you don't have a copy of the invoice.
Most stores these days have all purchase information stored for years, especially places like Makro and can reprint an invoice - also a lot easier if you paid by card.
MI also wanted me to pay to swap console number 4 but I whined and cried on hellopeter and it got sorted out.

Hmmm... as I have said previously. Credit Card slip, Australian Xbox 360 and no RRoD. 5 mins and I walked out with a brand new UK Xbox 360 without paying a cent. So I don't understand their policy.

With all these swop out madness going on ... I can see the consumers predicament.

I say screw it ... I repair RROD units. Its far less than R680 "handling fee" MI Digital asks :D

Oh ya I just want to make sure of one thing

Okay I have my proof of purchase, and the Claim form that I recieved from MI digital
Now, they emphasize alot on this authorization number being important and everything. When I phoned MS, I recieved an Authorization number from them saying I should use this If I want to swop out my 360. But on the claim form it states "An Authorization number will only be issued if the proof of purchase is sent through, and if your Xbox360 falls within the warranty periods." - "Within 48 hours of supplying the correct and complete info, you will be notified of your Authorization Number" - Now I already have my Authorization code, MS gave that to me. Does this mean I have to fill in the form and fax it with my proof of purchase and recieve a new number from MI or what? I'm kinda confused here, and I wanna do it right the first time without any hassles. - please guys I need a response quick, wanna do this stuff tommorow.

let me tell you about my experiance thats nearly at an end at last.

my box gave me weird code (E76 me thinks - doesnt make a diff cos they treat it like RROD either way) i call microsoft, they run some test and pronounce my box dead but still within warranty and a ref no for MI digital.

I DO NOT CONTACT THE RETAILER BUT MID DIRECTLY (this is wat the guy at CNA told me to do) MID then emails me a claim form to fill in. filled in the form and faxed it to all the numbers there.

the only hold up ends up being the availability of stock; they contacted me yesterday to confirm the delivery address (i sent in the form on the 11/12/2008!!) but there was no talk of proof of purchase or any fees.

Okay cool I understand :) but you know at the section "Office Use" - what authorization number must you fill in there?
