Karabo Thosago, 23, has gained instant fame after jumping into a pool at a Planet Fitness gym to save a member who was submerged in the water.

CCTV footage of the rescue has gone viral on social media as Thosago, who is a cleaner at the gym in Craighall Park, didn't hesitate when he noticed someone was in trouble.

"I was so scared, very scared. I've never seen something like that. I just thought if I don't jump in, then this person can die in a matter of seconds," Thosago told News24.

The footage shows a swimmer nearing the end of the lane when he suddenly slips under water. Thosago, fully clothed, jumps in and lifts the person's head so he can get air.

Good work, sir.

I wonder what happened to the swimmer. He just sort of slips to the bottom.

It's something any decent human being would have done, sadly nowadays this has become so rare that when it actually happens, it makes the news.

You'd think that. But it's never really been the case, humans tend to default to bystander mode and think that someone else will do it. Though this tends to occur where there are more people.

But Shaun said "decent human being". We seem to have a shortage of those in the world.

Just watched the video. Well done to the guy who jumped into the pool and saved another persons' life. In my opinion, he deserves way more than a R5k reward!

It probably happens regularly but just does not make the news. Just the other day a guy choked badly on his food and we got him breathing again. I honestly thought he was a gonner, really scary.

I do agree with you 100%. But, here I am asking myself a few questions. Was there anyone else around there? How long would that man have been under water if the cleaner did not see him. Then, the cleaner could just have stood there alerting other people, but instead he did something that was not even part of his job and jumped into the water and pulled the man up, saving his life.

This is well deserved. This guy can be trained and used for so much more than cleaning. I would like to see him perform as a lifeguard on some Durban beach one day.
