WATCH | Drowning man rescued by hero cleaner at Joburg gym pool

I do agree with you 100%. But, here I am asking myself a few questions. Was there anyone else around there? How long would that man have been under water if the cleaner did not see him. Then, the cleaner could just have stood there alerting other people, but instead he did something that was not even part of his job and jumped into the water and pulled the man up, saving his life.

This is well deserved. This guy can be trained and used for so much more than cleaning. I would like to see him perform as a lifeguard on some Durban beach one day.

Safety at work is everyone's responsibility; from the top management to the people on the shop floor.

Wonderful story. May he achieve all his aspirations!

Absolutely. Make sure you pick up those banana peels, whether you are a cleaner, a receptionist, a manager or even the CEO. Make sure those desk drawers are closed so that no one gets hurt walking past them.

But, jumping into a pool saving a person drowning is quite a bit of a massive risk if you have no previous life saving experience. Yes, I know this is almost incomprehensible for many keyboard warriors, but believe me when I say that many healthy and strong people can put their lives at risk doing this. Many of them died before trying to save other people drowning. Didn't happen once before, wasn't the last time it happened. It will still happen a lot of times in future.

This guy should have called for help from people who were trained and experienced in doing this. He didn't. He took a risk and it paid off this time.

Look, nonetheless, you called me to this thread to get my opinion. Here you have it. This guy is a hero in my opinion. He did what he never should have done. He saved a life.

If you thought I would come in here and bang on a black guy, thinking I would make this a racial issue, sorry to have disappointed you.

I invited you here to read positive news for a change. If you want to racialise it, it's your own prerogative.

Thanks, I appreciate it. Positive news this is. Yes, in my opinion this guy did a stupid thing, but he saved a life. This makes him a real hero in my view. And, no, nothing to racialise at all.

The last paragraph

I know, I just thought that you maybe tried to trigger me along the racial lines. Didn't know you wanted to attract my attention to good news only. You know, some say I am racist, some say I am a doomsday prophet, some think I am extremely negative. So, I am not sure along which one of these routes people are often engaging me....

Good work, sir.

I wonder what happened to the swimmer. He just sort of slips to the bottom.

I suspect that he may have had some sort of seizure. He said in the video that tests were done and nothing was picked up. This is not uncommon. I have seen these type of Epileptic seizures before in people who never had Epilepsy before or running in their families. All tests come back negative and there is no explanation.

He got dizzy when he stood up and blacked out. Low blood sugar.

Would have never noticed without the red circle.

So this guy did a stupid thing by jumping in and saving this guy's life whereas he should rather have called someone to help?

It's something any decent human being would have done, sadly nowadays this has become so rare that when it actually happens, it makes the news.
I doubt it's rare, what's rare is the media taking an interest. This happens every day on our beaches. Black and white victims, black and white rescuers. It's only our esteemed politicians who insist we are different and the media who decide it's not newsworthy.
Congrats to the two heros.

It probably happens regularly but just does not make the news. Just the other day a guy choked badly on his food and we got him breathing again. I honestly thought he was a gonner, really scary.
I think that had to be one of the scariest things to witness.

Yes, like I said earlier, if you are not properly trained in water rescue, such attempt may easily, very easily, turn against you and get you and the victim both drowned. Thousands of people die drowning when trying to save someone else. If you are not properly trained for this, it is a risk and a big one too.

It's a small pool and not an ocean/lake.
