MP5 won't be my choice, though. Want something that'll impact with at least 2,200 FPS on target. That's the minimum general velocity for proper permanent wound channels in soft tissue.

Clearly the MSM are NOT printing / investigating anywhere near the number of "incidents" that are actually happening !

Handgun helps but is not really the answer
THIS

IS
WE -- the still living are slowly getting to the point where such items will have to be acquired -- by fair or foul means !
Terrible choice for a concealed weapon ;-)

so, guys who claim to carry it 24/7, do you carry it when you take a dump? I mean robbers can come in anytime. Do you carry it on you when you are doing gardening or diy'ing in garage ? What about when you go for a swim in your pool - is your wife on standby that time?

No sarcasm intended. There must be some times where you relax (like braai?)

This.. it was my 1st reaction. Who the hell is this guy? Because I don’t know a lot of people who have guns and will be chilling outside their home with it in a hip holster unless they expect ****. The guys I know have guns have it for work in dodge areas with cash.. not really for home security. So yah.. would not be the 1st hit in recent months.

Lonehill is not exactly a place to have a random driver by.. for what exactly? There is no car in the drive way.. if it was a robbery 3+ guys would jump out and usually they want to get you in house.. not outside.

As mentioned by others before me - there are a lot of people that carry every day. (go to one of your local FA clubs/ranges on an open day and make some new friends!)
But because they carry concealed (FCA stipulates it needs to be covered, not concealed but most responsible licensed FA owners conceal) you would be none the wiser.

At a braai a few months back one of the parents was going on about how all FA owners are wannabe Rambo's, how dangerous FA's are around kids and how she wishes no-one would be allowed to have FA's in SA (or the world for that matter). Besides me standing right next to her there were 3 other dads there that I know of who were carrying also.

The point is that criminals do not advertise when they will rob/attack you, or how many there will be when they do.
As a single parent with small children that spend a lot of times outdoors I carry all the time.

Yes there are times you need to take it off for a few minutes but you put it somewhere under your direct control.
ie. when showering you lock the door and place it somewhere safe.
I had a portable SABS aproved safe installed in my car for when we are out and i cannot keep it on my person (this is legal as per FCA in case anyone wonders)

I'm relaxed most lot of the time :)
But just like my wallet, keys and pocket knife, they are always on me in the same place in case I need them.

nb. if you hand your FA to another person while you are in the pool, then the FA is no longer under your direct control (unlike when you stand beside/behind another person at a range where they are using your FA for practice) so that would be in contravention of the FCA.

I know quite a few guys that carry everywhere.

Yes yes yes. I don't have a pool, but when I do go swimming somewhere, I leave it at home (no other choice). Even when braaiing - it's there, like my pocket knife and torch as well.

Did he hit the robber or not? The caption says no injuries reported

As far as I know robbers tend to stay away from media and police, which means they didn't actually report the injuries sustained in the robbery

Sho. hectic. For pool comment, I just assumed your SO would have another firearm. Or perhaps wives don't carry them around that much if they got their husbands with them all the time - no idea.

And your SO - do they carry FA as well? And kids? They can get attacked when not in your sight?

No. She can't. She won't carry at pools/beach either. Doing the beach thing I usually have two "types" of visits - a swimming visit, when there are other people and violent crime isn't a problem, and a "relaxing" visit, when we go there alone-ish, early morning, late afternoons when there aren't other people. First one, gun is left at home, second one, it goes along as usual.

Not everyone has the same mindset or is prepared to take on the responsibility that comes with carrying a FA.

My late wife was very much in favor of me carrying but would never have carried herself.

Given that most pistol rounds do less than 1500fps, barring the FN five-seven, are you advocating EDC'ing a rifle?

Yah but they business owners or petrol station etc. not illicit product sales & fraudulent dealings with gov officials as many hits have been of late in Jhb over the last 2yrs.

Fastening you’re seat belt is standard protective so I’m not sure what u trying to say. It’s pretty obvious this isn’t a robbery but hey believe what u want.

Go find stats on day time incident like this where it’s “just a robbery”.
I'm with you on this one.

The only thing I can thing of is the son called ahead to say that something was up and the dad came out with a gun to check things out.

Either that or they really just picked the wrong guy to jump.

Nope, normal private people. It's what people do. I can point out plenty of guys who's used their pistols in recent years, people I know, in self-defense. Just because the concept is foreign to you, doesn't make it false. Hell, I was involved in "just a robbery" not a month ago, and the minutes before leading up to that I was in the street outside, gun on my person. Also right next to me where I was working when the bastard decided to break open the garage door and steal a bicycle.

And no, I'm not a business owner or petrol station etc. or anything. I'm a plain Joe.
Just an interesting note here.

Looking at the video the assailant had the gun on the armed guy before he could draw. So even though he was prepared he would have had his hands in his pants while the barrel was pointed at him.

This worked out because the assailant was not in the least prepared to shoot. He was lucky.

That is a good point that you make there. And yes, it worked out for him but normally you would wait for the right moment to draw but even more importantly is moving off your X as soon as possible and not stand still and draw.

You can see by the draw, aim, shots and follow up actions that the victim is trained and not jist your normal training but something that actually worked for him in this instance.

For sure - He did exactly what was needed very quickly.
Also he didn't empty his gun so shows some restraint, this guys knows his stuff.

I would advocate EDC'ing a tank, if that was possible. When I'm defending my life I want as much firepower as I can get, not the least. Handguns are, for all intents and purposes, ****. They pack a terrible punch, they don't penetrate like you want, they're terrible to aim and to shoot accurately, it's a short, fat, heavy, inaccurate bullet and they have absolutely no stopping power (barring a few select calibers). They're tiny though, which is the only thing that makes them attractive. I would ideally want to carry a .223 Rem rifle with a 16" barrel, dual optics and match grade ammo each and every day, but it's not practical, unfortunately. Not in SA where people are scared shitless if they just hear the word "gun".

"The more you practice, the luckier you get". Remember this.
