Bullying and violent behaviour of pupils in schools have come under the spotlight again with a video showing female pupils attacking a fellow pupil going viral on social media.
On Friday night, Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi shared a video on Facebook and Twitter showing a group of schoolgirls physically ganging up on and attacking another pupil.
"Another madness at a school @ Ekurhuleni. I’m there Monday morning. Someone will regret it," the MEC posted.
Gauteng education spokesperson Steve Mabona confirmed that the department was aware of the incident.

Criminal records 'would be good for girls who beat fellow pupil'

Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi is not averse to criminal records being dished out to pupils from Crystam Park High School who were filmed beating a classmate.

Addressing pupils at the Ekurhuleni school on Monday, he said: "It's the only way they are going to learn", as he called for the law to take its course.

"If they were children, they would have not done what they did," he said of the grade 8 and 9 pupils aged 14 and 15.

Lesufi visited the school after becoming aware of a video taken on Wednesday last week that showed a defenceless girl on the ground, surrounded by other female pupils who kicked and slapped her.

The young girl did not fight back but tried to cover her head as the blows rained down.

Another video recording of a school fight in Ekurhuleni emerges, Lesufi calls for end to 'madness'

Another video involving violent behaviour at an Ekurhuleni school has emerged.

The video, which was posted by Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi on his Twitter account on Monday morning, shows two female pupils fighting at Edenvale High School.

This follows the recent circulation of another video which shows a group of pupils attacking another at Crystal Park High School, in Benoni, also in Ekurhuleni.

Lesufi was expected to visit Crystal Park High School on Monday and was due to address pupils at the school. He has vowed to take action against the perpetrators.

In the Crystal Park video, some pupils are seen dragging the victim by her school bag, which is strapped to her back, as she fights to stand up. Some girls in the crowd are heard cheering, while others scream: "Mshayeni! (Beat her up)".

Someone should teach these girls some self defense!

Their technique is all wrong, you flail wildly, to the left, and then to the right, not up and down... And not a single kick!

2/10, would not recommend.

And why did they shoot this in portrait, street fights are best shot at 21:9 possibly with a few dutch angles thrown in to maintain the suspense.

Whilst I am glad that there is a spotlight on this behaviour I wondering how the minister had permission to release the video. Isn't it a violation of their rights - especially the victim.

Maybe some of them saw that happening where they're coming from and thought it's a normal way to dispense justice, looks similar to some more horrific scenes i've seen before.

Since when did a punch-up become bullying?

The first one, maybe don't know what led up to it. The second one is nothing but a fist fight...

Well maybe because the girl was attacked for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

You know that how?

People fight, have been doing so for thousands if not millions of years...

I'm afraid I agree with Pitbull on this one.
I went to a girls' school in England in the '70s and we used to see the occaisional fight. When the boys school visited, there were certainly boy-fights all the time.

From this video it looks like a pile-on ie bullying. But I don't know that.

I suppose it depends on your perspective. I can't think of a single justifiable reason for physical violence except to intimidate / frighten / beat the other person into submission and that is a form of bullying.

The effects of aboloshing corporal punishment.
You haven't traveled at all and see how different the world can be. Violence is an alien thing in many Eastern cultures like Japan and Vietnam. This would never happen, and they don't have corporal punishment.

We've got this problem because we have a culture that holds on to the notion that everything can be solved with violence.

How did you come to this conclusion?

I worked in Vietnam. I lived there.
We went traveling through Japan, lived with the locals.

Do yourself a favor and do it. Will blow your mind.

Strong reactive cultures don't perpetuate violence - goes against the fabric of the culture.
