I have a Dell Inspiron N5050 laptop that currently has 2GB RAM

I would like to try and improve performance and make the laptop last as long as possible. I thought to upgrade the memory first and possibly later the hard drive with SSD hard drive

I checked the specs and seems like there are 2 memory slots and this can go up to 8GB RAM in total. I think that it has 1 memory slot free

Is it possible to install an additional 4GB DDR3 RAM in the open slot, so that the total memory is 6GB RAM?

Or do both memory items need to be the same size in which case 2x 4GB RAM would be needed?

Can I install a SSD hard drive in this laptop as replacement for its existing hard drive to improve performance?

If you google 'Dell Inspiron N5050 6GB" you'll find plenty of them that have been upgraded to 6GB RAM so it's doable.

Yes you can replace the HDD with an SSD.

I replaced my ssd drive. The performance improvement is remarkable considering it is a 7 year laptop. I also bought ram, but it was 1.35v instead of 1.5v and did not work on my laptop. But I dont think I am going to upgrade the ram as my machine is currently faster than my wife less than a year old laptop.

I'll swapped it for some beers, so long as it not Lion Beers, maybe some Castle Lites. Not in Cape Town at the moment. New job has got me travelling alot. I bought it at Wootware:
G.Skill DDR3-1600 4gb 1.35v x 2 sticks.

SSD and additional ram it make it feel like rocket ship!

SSD's are so cheap now, they have to start giving them away soon.

You can have two different sizes of memory.

I always thought this was because of the limit for a 32 bit OS
