As long as I can remember WBS's web cache server in JHB (cache-01.jhb.wbs.co.za) was always on IP 196.2.127.9.

Seems now all web connections originate from IP 196.2.124.250 ... the new web proxy. Still seems to be squid, so they havent invested in any 'big iron'. The old 196.2.127.9 seems to have been decommisioned ... cant ping anymore.

Has it made a difference ... well inital page download pause seems to be less ... or maybe I'm just used to it now? Anyone else experienced better web page download performance?

Use http://www.whatismyip.com/ to check what proxy you're using.

I wouldn't be surprised if they either previously used squid access control as part of their traffic shaping / capping efforts or are now experimenting with it...

The Squid

The new proxy gave me problems last nite, couldnt access www.co.za.
Hope it doesnt have the same problems that the old squid had.

it doesnt mean its a new proxy, it could be the same proxy with a different IP. And native you'll find 95% of those error messages the proxy sends have nothing to do with the proxy and everything to do with the target server.

Well the old IP still resolves to cache-01.jhb.wbs.co.za with reverse lookups but cache-01.jhb.wbs.co.za resolves to the IP mentioned above.

uh... no that wont work, non anonymous web proxies like the WBS squid proxy send X_FORWARDED_FOR which contains your IP, web applications or apache have a choice whether to use the proxies IP which will be REMOTE_HOST or your IP which is the X_FORWARDED_FOR, www.whatismyip.com and www.whatismyip.org both use the forwarded IP which ends up being YOUR IP, not the WBS cache proxy's

Yeah well as long as it provides a useful service and works well, then who cares how simple it is...

And by the time you've gone through 3 proxies it shows (very intelligently and from Firefox under Windoze):
unknown

From IE (and Firefox under Linux) I get my private network IP, not the WBS public IP...

Odd, same tower, same signal, no problems. Very fast, fetches and loads pages without the "2 second" proxy pause.
