As much as I dislike VAGs I'm gonna have to agree with FiestaST. The up! is a much better choice.
Any chance the roof was taken off in the rebuild process to make it easier and thus the can opener effect?
Might not be as prone to happen in the "stock" version?
They'll probably just write it off (lol) as abnormal driving behaviour/purpose not applicable to every day cars.
Except the car would have been built and prepped by TRD in JHB from my understanding, so they would have used a stock standard shell and built things around it and in it...
This damage would potentially happen to everyday cars if they roll as well.
I don't think they can sell crap like the Ai-tos in the 1st world.
As long as we don't have better safety standards, and people in SA are happy to buy these cars, they will keep on being sold here.
Didn't ncap say they shoudent even be sold anywhere?
And this is why Toyota is probably thanking their lucky stars that this didn't happen in the States, otherwise we would be looking at a total Etios recall!
You had better brace yourself for the imminent SA launch of the Hyundai i20 Active & Fiat Avventura then!

My god.
What is so active about an i10?
These shots were taken of an Etios that did a nose over tail flip in the Cullinan Rally yesterday.
Nose over tail is not uncommon in a rally car, and the cars always end up in a mess, but never have I seen one lose its roof before.
As the tail gate opened up, it ripped the roof off with it.
These guys survived unhurt because of a roll cage and 6 point seat belts.
God help anyone if they happen to flip in this way without a roll cage and 6 point belts.
Don't know about a total recall. But perhaps they can stop calling these cars "Cross overs" even hinting that these can be driven on a dirt road is silly.
I see other cars like the the Polo Cross and Renault equivalent and I just want to groan. Who are they trying to fool.
