To all those who post the helpfull replies: switch over........

We don't all have that option guys. I am stuck with I-burst because there is no other option available. Try and get anything in the Townships. No ADSL (not planned for 3 years according to Telkom, No Sentech, No 3G.......I don't know where the PREVIOUSLY disadvantaged comes from. Oh and we are virtually in Cape Town so not in some remote area.

I tell ya, it's only gonna get better if ICASA kick some arse !

The UK version of ICASA forced BT (British Telekom) to allow the larger ISP's to gain access to the exchanges to install their own ADSL hardware - IOW, DSLAMs - and to do the installation at peoples businesses and homes.

That is the ONLY way that things will improve here, before that happened in the UK, broadband was as hard to get there.

You only need to look at how broadband has taken off in the UK to see how the method of allowing ISP's access can dramatically speed up broadband adoption.

Fact is, Telkom don't make a lot of money from ADSL - they'd rather people sit with dialup, which nets them more (bigger user base) and corporate clients on ISDN - least ways, that's my opinion.

They need to be FORCED into complying with tactics that have worked overseas.

Luckily iBurst is not the only wireless ISP, depending on your requirements, you could get GPRS - I think up to 80kbits/s if the cellery tower(s) you use have been upgraded to Coding Scheme 3/4 [something technical like that], and then there has to be a possibility of using EDGE and 3G as well, best to ask the on forum representatives for rollout plans in your area...

It's very unfortunate that Telecoms providers in this country are required to do their bit in order to service under-serviced areas, then do so as a token gesture here and there, and just continue as per normal targetting only profitable areas.

My biggest pet peeve was Sentech's Marlboro tower where they "conveniently" neglected to install the sector that pointed towards Alex, yet installed the others.

Unfortunately, due to the stifling legislation that does nothing to stimulate competition, this is unlikely to change soon. Under-serviced areas will remain underserviced.

To be fair though, many areas that should be able to get DSL easily, even though otherwise not underserviced, cannot either. We have Telkom to thank for that. The only way is for even more competition to be introduced. A duopoly != competition.

your right about that!
BT held the monoply of dsl markets, the cable markets were fine since they used their own connection.
Apparently Other dsl ISP's filed a law suit againsnt unfair competetion
Similar to AMD.vs.Intel

I feel sorry for the people that are stuck with iBurst and have no other options ... honestly! I would not have been able to handle iBurst for another month!

1. Well in Soweto there are not many users like in the northen surburbs of JHB
2. And I dont think we will have ADSL lines any time soon.
3. Running my internet cafe with 3G or EDGE will not be of benefit ATM.
