Checkers' "cheaper to use Sixty60" claim tested

Testing by MyBroadband revealed that it is cheaper to use Checkers' Sixty60 eCommerce service than driving to the shop yourself to buy groceries.

Checkers claimed that the petrol price hike means it is cheaper to have groceries delivered than paying for travel costs to one of its stores.

It's definitely popular. Actually went to a Checkers today to buy a few items I needed and I see this checkers has 2 x tills just for Sixty60 orders and while I was shopping the sixty60 staff moving around shopping and scanning items. It was quite a buzz with them running around so it looks like it's booming.

I use them for most of my groceries. My complaints is finding things like buns/cheese that's store cut rather than the packaged things that arent as fresh and I am under impression cheaper as well.

For our trip, we used a Volvo SUV, which, according to the AA, costs R5.26/km to run. The return trip distance is 9.8 km which translates into travel costs of R51.55.

Mhmm. Isn't that a bit too expensive in terms of running costs?

Well if you get fulfilled from our local Checkers you will have to factor in another R50 odd rand and some time as you will have to drive there yourself to pick up the other half of your order that they did not feel like including in the delivery.

In my area it takes at least 2 hours to shop and deliver these days. Last week waited about 4 hours. Definitely not sixty60 anymore so for now I don't use them anymore.

Don't blame Checkers if you live in a sh*tty place

Checkers Sixty60 also only supports orders of up to 30 items at a time, which means that a consumer with a large shopping list would have to pay for delivery more than once.
Do a week's worth of shopping in one go and sixty-60 isn't looking so cheap.
