Vodacom R199 4G phone tested

Vodacom launched the 4G-enabled Mobicel S4 cloud-based phone in September 2024, and I've been using one for the past few days to test the experience.

First things first: the main reason for purchasing this phone is to ensure you don't get left behind when South Africa switches off its 2G and 3G networks, not to prioritise photography or social media.

The device supports apps like TikTok, Facebook, X, YouTube, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram. Users must open the “Cloud Phone” app and connect to access these platforms.

Happy to hear, though I know this under a different name.

Networks aren't as pedantic about kicking "inactive" SIMs out it seems. Dual nano SIM support at this price point has my interest piqued as an owner of 6 numbers, I'd add two more just because.

The amount of money you will spend on airtime to makes calls and send SMSes will quickly equal the price difference between this device and one that supports WhatsApp.

I'm not sure where the reviewer came up with a 0.08MP camera?? Mobicel claim 2MP on their website! On the Vodacom website it doesn't seem to have a camera at all...

It does NOT support WiFi Hot Spot.

I supports Micro USB and I'm assuming that you can tether for a data connection plus it has Bluetooth.

Oddly enough, this type of device is hugely popular with millions of people!

Wanted to get something like this for my grandfather but no whatsapp is a huge blow.
