I am always excited when a new VPS provider comes around, so while webafrica is an established company, they are a new addition to the somewhat limited vps provider population in South Africa.

So I have decided to purchase two different vps packages with web africa to see if they have something worth looking at.

My first impression is not good, I signed up, I have paid and I am waiting for my servers to become available. Although they do say it takes 1 day from sign up till the server is live, which I think is something that they should work on, but maybe I am spoilt as I am used to the speed of linode.

I will try the servers out over the month and keep everyone posted.

Hi Evil-Twin,

Great news to hear you have signed up for our New VPS offerings. At the moment we are doing a manual setup until we have completed the automation process which is currently being worked on.

I would like to follow up on the setup process for you. Can you please PM me your client code and I will have a look.

Hi Evil-Twin,

How are you finding the VPS? Please let me know if there is anything else I can assist with.

Took 4 days to get my "test" server up and running - what a laugh.

Okay, so I have now reviewed web africa's vps service for around 2 months.

Generally I try to be fair and I look for the positive aspects, but these guys should seriously rethink offering this service.

So to start, when I signed up, I selected the debian operating system from the sign up page. Once I had already paid and it was too late to go back, they phoned me and told me that even though they listed debian as an OS choice, they were mistaken and I had the choice of CentOS or Ubuntu (linux based choices). So I went ubuntu. Regardless of how similar ubuntu is to debian as it is based on debian, it is very different in many ways.

However, I decided to let it go and continue to test their vps product. Essentially, most vps offerings, regardless of who offers it, are very similar aside from a few things. Web Africa use microsoft hyper-v as their virtualization platform.

What concerns me is that I know for a fact they put a lot of research and effort into offering virtual hosting, and even with all of that effort and time spent, they decided to go for hyper-v?

That is not even the worst part...

They seem incapable of keeping their servers up. It is actually pathetic.

For example:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
root@socrates:~# last reboot
reboot system boot 3.2.0-23-generic Thu Nov 29 22:32 - 22:54 (00:21)
reboot system boot 3.2.0-23-generic Wed Nov 28 10:03 - 22:31 (1+12:27)
reboot system boot 3.2.0-23-generic Tue Nov 27 14:56 - 22:31 (2+07:34)
reboot system boot 3.2.0-23-generic Tue Nov 27 14:38 - 22:31 (2+07:52)
reboot system boot 3.2.0-23-generic Tue Nov 27 13:58 - 22:31 (2+08:32)
reboot system boot 3.2.0-23-generic Mon Nov 26 17:29 - 22:31 (3+05:01)
reboot system boot 3.2.0-23-generic Mon Nov 26 17:23 - 22:31 (3+05:07)
reboot system boot 3.2.0-23-generic Tue Nov 6 08:37 - 22:31 (23+13:53)

wtmp begins Tue Nov 6 08:37:34 2012

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

7 reboots in 2 days? what a waste of time. If you want a good local vps, go to www.vps.co.za or www.247hosting.co.za as those companies actually KNOW what they are doing.

Thanks for the feedback. I still want to get a small vps to play with sometime. You have any experience with overseas hosts?

Well I am impressed. It takes a big company to admit that they are in too deep.

Thanks for all the updates and I hope that in the future WA considers offering VPS again, provided that its stable and consistent next time.

Thanks for the feedback here, much appreciated!
We're ironing out the kinks from today already and once we're certain we can offer a rock solid VPS platform we'll open up the product again :)

WOW where do i begin? It's almost 3 days right now and one of my VPS servers is still down. They manage not only to broke the VPS, but wipe my server + a complete website. They even manage to wipe all the backups for that server. A services I paid for. A service I was told that hold 14 days of backups. They refuse to put me through to management when I spoke to there support department. The same support guy named Tanesau? phoned me back and told me he has bad news for me. They manage to lost all the backups for the server! Management and Support does not call me back. They do not reply on emails and in there forums it is constant excuses that does not answer my question. I have supported this company for many years and referred clients to them and this is what I get ???
