Hi there

Anybody having success in running a webcam on Linux (Ubuntu, SuSE etc)?

Which make do you recommend?

Also, is there such a thing as Ethernet Webcam, and where can one get such a thing?

I'm looking at ways and means to use a webcam to have a look at what's going on outside at night without leaving the house at all... after all, if the neighbour's dog is barking, then sometimes one must go and have a look...

"Ethernet Webcam" are called IP cameras and they are available and popular. I don't recommend it for chatting like a normal webcam , because they were designed for security surveilance, which I think is what you want.

Its all browser based with the Axis cameras being really good to Firefox and Linux.

nic, thanks for the reply, will have a shufti at axis's site and see what they offer... for me an ip-based system will make more sense as I don't want to be locked in some proprietary hardware scheme which I cannot view on a computer.

...and for chatting which webcams do you recommend? Either USB or IP-based, it doesn't matter, as long as it will work with any Linux distro... I want to move away from Windows.

Yes, tons of toys and I've played with most of them! :D

Regarding Linux friendly webcams, I don't know - I'm also looking into webcams and still have to check myself which are linux friendly. So, sorry, can't help you there.

I'm also thinking how you would hook up your IP camera to SKype or similiar apps - they will probably looking for some video driver which the IP camera doens't do.

All in all, there has to be some webcams out there for linux because I have seen Gnome meeting and Wengo Phone having the option to connect. So good luck and post your results here if you find anything :)
