I'm positive this topic has been discussed before but i'd appreciate some advice for those of you more clued up in the webhosting world :)

I need to organise 2 domain names for our company that we will use for the website address as well as emails. The company consists of 2 seperate divisions and we will therefore need 2 seperate domains.

Will i need 2 seperate webhosting packages to accomodate the two different domains or will it be ok to use 1 webhost who's requirements will be sufficient for both domains.

Where is the best place to organise domains as well as webhosting? ( i.t.o service and reliability) - would prefer a company that won't go down tomorrow.

We'll need about 10 different email boxes which would use about 150 meg max a day for all emails. Traffic generated on the website will be very little as it will merely be an information page.

Will appreciate any advice
Thankyou - Marco

Greetings,

Afrihost.com

Have you consider d a dedicated server ? Afrihost will manage this for you too?

What hosting package are you needing - Windows or Linux.

Cpanel for Linux is great / Afrihost use this /

I also know that they are working on a Cpanel for Windows - should be available before the end of January.

Adding to Playboy's post, would subdomains work here?

Domain: CompanyName
SubDomain: Division1.CompanyName
SubDomain: Division2.CompanyName

Surely mail and web could be split like this? or not.....?

Gulliver webmaking is not my area of expertise but as i was involved in making webpages years ago i have more or less an idea of setting up a website. What would be the advantage of a dedicated server and what are the prices? Are all the servers running on linux nowadays?

You don't need two hosting packages to host your two domains. Many webhosts allw you to create "addon domains" so that you can host multiple domains on one hosting account. It is very unlikely that you will need a dedicated server. Shared hosting will be fine for you, IMHO. Then, if and when your requirements grow, you can upgrade to a VPS or dedicated server.

I am not exactly sure why a dedicated server was recommended but you should be good to go with a provider that allows "Add - On Domain Names" with their packages (if you wish to use a single account).

As for the domain name, you can register that yourself (it involves a little more work if it is .co.za), just be sure it is registered in your name if you go through the web host.

Texo could you possibly give some links to companies which provide shared hosting ?

Give serv.co.za a try, they support addon domains and will register your domains on your behalf in your name. Only drawback is that they host international, but price is really good

Guys preferably i'd prefer a local host as we are dealing with the local market. We'd need .co.za names to identify ourselves within the market. It's not possible to have a .co.za domain with international webhosting, or is it?

Also, what happens in the case that our ADSL is capped, will we still be able to access our email which is on the .co.za domain? Im considering our emails would then also be internationally hosted?

You don't need 2 hosting package, as states before. An Addon domain for the 2nd domain, running on the 1st domain will work well enough. Then both domains share the same hosting package, web space, bandwidth and control panel details.

What kind of space, and traffic do you need? We have servers both in the USA, and South Africa and can host the .co.za domains on either server if you want to.

If you are capped, then you will not be able to access your e - mail or other data.

As for .co.za, it is most certainly possible to host internationally.

Internationally Hosted: http://www.hostgator.com/shared.shtml

I do not have experience with local hosts, so I can not comment on them.
With current pricing there is no reason for you to ever suggest an international host for a company.

Playboy, can I ask you the million dollar question nobody seems to have asked in this thread yet:

WHY do you need these websites?

Is it going to tie into your network? Have CRM software for people to access your site? Need logins/databases?

Or is it simply going to be a website with information on your company?

If it's just a simple straight forward run of the mill "About us" type website, why do you need 2? Sure, you have 2 separate divisions. But it's owned by the same company, so therefor your company's website would then, i don't know, have a link to these 2 different divisions? Instead of having 2 different domains.

Reason why is Google and SEO. If you build it, it doesn't mean they'll come. You have to try and drive SOME traffic to your sites for google to notice them. And splittng them up in 2 domains would make it twice as hard to get your company on the map.

BUT, I do understand the reason WHY the need for 2 domains that you're going to run emails (and other web application software) off of it as well. However, why not just setup everyone on the same domain? They work for the same company don't they? p.leroux@yourcompany.com;m.playboy@yourcompany.com

If you follow simple naming conventions you won't scratch head as to who is who

That is probably the reason why there was a suggestion to get a dedicated server in the first place. However. AGAIN. No one asked you what you'd want to use these for in the first place. Which makes all these suggestions m00t.

Oh and on an added note. The reason why I ask you these questions is simple. If your company is going to expand rapidly or wanting to use web based applications in the near future, you'd need to think about these (and let us know the future plans) so it won't disrupt any services in future.

Its all good and well getting a 2 website "plan" for R250 per month but end up needing a dedicated server and having to move everyone over to that server 3-4 months down the line as you're launching your "new innovative" CRM web based system or whatever... you'd need to factor in future requirements as well when making this decision

Acid i need to setup these websites for the company. The company is a family trust which is split into two different companies in different sectors. Each company runs on its own (i.e one involved in mining equipment and the other in canning). They both need to be seperately recognised so that suppliers and buyers can identify them. For this reason i would like to have 2 unique domain names to identify and differentiate the two companies, even though they fall under the family trust.

The website willl only be for merely be an information page and as the business is not a "internet intensive" business the website disk space will be small as well as traffic. However email usage might be a fair amount as alot of business will be conducted via emails.

I've identified hetznar as the top pick as i've only heard great things about them. My only problem is that they only allow 1.5 gig of local data traffic which might not be enough. On the other hand webafrica i can get the package for R50pm wjhich allows 3 gig data traffic which is more than enough. Only problem is webafrica only allows 7 different email addresses and might need some more.

I also see that cybersmarts rates are pretty unbeatable..R35pm for 3gig traffic, 500meg webspace and a 100 email addresses.. definately the best i've seen, however not sure about their service of longetivity. Anyone perhaps using them?

only problem is 1.5 gig per month.. don't think thats enough local bandwith.. and going to anything higher will cost R200pm + .. Additionally i need 2 of these... So alot more expensive

To give you an idea, 1.5gig of bandwidth currently means I can get around 3283 unique users to my website in a month. I'm pretty sure your website will NOT be that popular.

The 1.5gig they advertise is for website data only, not email. Email usually gets routed through their own servers or what not. If I were you I'd rather not get a R50 package if you rely on email for business. You get what you pay for in the end.

The website isnt the problem.. the emails is what will use the bandwith and it is included in that traiffc -> quoted from email to hetznar -> Your aggregate traffic is the sum of all outward-bound, inward-bound, email and FTP traffic.
