JOHANNESBURG - The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has issued a call to all workers and South Africans to join its national strike next week.

Cosatu has called on people to stay away from work or take to the streets in various rally's across the country on Wednesday, 24 August.

Briefing the media at Cosatu House in Braamfontein on Thursday, the federation’s president Zingiswa Losi said the protected national strike was meant to put pressure on both the government and the private sector to correct and resolve the socioeconomic challenges that continue to stifle South African households.

“Workers cannot continue to sit back whilst we continue to suffer. The lives of the people of South Africa need to change and so we are urging that we all join hands together and raise these issues because it is not about workers who are on slave wages, but it is also about the economy that is not able to create employment.”

The announcement comes just a week after the South African Federation of Trade Unions indicated it would also embark on a national shutdown against the rising cost of living, load shedding and fuel hikes on the same day.

COSATU: ANC WILL FACE DIFFICULT ELECTION IN 2024

Cosatu said the African National Congress (ANC) will face its most difficult election come 2024, if it does not address bread and butter issues.

The largest trade union in South Africa, which sits in the National Economic Development and Labour Council and is an ANC alliance partner, said the intended national strike was aimed at demanding urgent action to shore up the country’s eroding economy.

Sending a strong message to the governing party, Losi said the ANC must act on the concerns raised by disgruntled South Africans or face their wrath at the polls.

Losi said the federation had engaged the ANC on many policies, but when it came to execution, that was in the hands of the governing party.

Like ****ing for virginity.
COSATU are allies with the ANC, they should call a meeting and thrash this out with them. They also want to moan about the ANC's mismanagement of the economy. Again, call a meeting with your allies instead of inconveniencing the rest of us.

So silly question, asking non union members to join in the strike surely does not extend the protection? Those people would be liable for disciplinary action.

If you want to protest, go to Luthuli house etc, thats where its needed.

How can this be a protected strike anyway? They haven't gone through the whole mediation etc etc process for this have that?

Surely this strike would open all members and non-members who participate to disciplinary action?

Problem is EFF wants to get rid of Ramaphosa but they don't have enough members for nationwide strike action

But now you have COSATO dressed in red going to strike and the EFF might try highjack it. Then they claim it was their calls to shut the country down that led to this.

“The EFF will also form part of all the progressive formations of SA to embark on a national shutdown which will seek to remove Ramaphosa from office. The nature of the shutdown which the EFF will partake in will not be candle-holding and white-flag type of a shutdown.

“It will be a shutdown that must communicate to the sitting government that enough is enough. We cannot fold our arms and do nothing when our country is being sold to the dogs,” Malema said.

There might be something underhand going on if COSATO become bedfellows with the EFF.

Not be candle-holding. This sounds like they want to cause damage

How about we all join hands together and make it the most productive day of the year, to boost the economy to enable job creation...
No, we would rather bring the economy to a standstill and destroy some infrastructure....
Economists says this strike will damage the economy further

LOL.... :ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:

You need a whole new government, a whole new set of laws, a whole new generation of people to change the cost of living or bringing it down.

Trade unions couldn't care less about this country. It's why they strike after signing multi-year agreements.
