So reading the articles, it does look as if this is a protected strike, and that baffles me immensely.

Like ****ing for virginity.
COSATU are allies with the ANC, they should call a meeting and thrash this out with them. They also want to moan about the ANC's mismanagement of the economy. Again, call a meeting with your allies instead of inconveniencing the rest of us.
That's not how we do it in Africa. F*** off with your colonial mindset

Yours truly,

COSATU & ANC

Do Union members get paid while on strike? If not, this strike may actually work because it takes money from unproductive workers and transfers it to business. If workers strike long enough, the savings could fund automation of some of the business.

Trade unions....Cant stand the fkrs....
Its why I am here...
My dad was on the UK mines back in the 80s and the half wits had a big strike in 1984...
My folks lost pretty much everything and dad said screw the UK then and took a job with Gencor..

That 'Arthur Twatface Scargil' didnt lose everything though....
The top brass all enjoy the trappings of Capitalism and will never feel the effects of a strike that they push their members into.
Yet to see a trade unionist live like any of their members, and I don't mean a shop steward who works in the company the members work for.

Depends. Protected strike I think they do. Unprotected means no work, no pay.
I believe some companies are stating that while strikes are allowed in the Labour Act, they will not support it and if their staff members support the strike it will be a case of absent without leave and subject to disciplinary procedures against them.

Nope, it's no work no pay.

But usually as part of the strike negotiations/settlement the employers agree to back pay union members to compensate for the lost wages during the strike action.

The term Kayfebea is exactly what the ANC and their alliance partners are doing. They pretend and act like that they are in opposition to the government, but know full well that they are a part of government.

In professional wrestling, kayfabe (/ˈkeɪfeɪb/; also called work or worked), as a noun, is the portrayal of staged events within the industry as "real" or "true", specifically the portrayal of competition, rivalries, and relationships between participants as being genuine and not staged. The term kayfabe has evolved to also become a code word of sorts for maintaining this "reality" within the direct or indirect presence of the general public.[1]

How can this be a protected strike anyway? They haven't gone through the whole mediation etc etc process for this have that?

Surely this strike would open all members and non-members who participate to disciplinary action?
OP has got it wrong. It's a national stay away and shouldn't be protected by the Act. Therefore no mediation or arbitration was involved. And if it's unprotected, and businesses justifiably expect their workers to be in the office and they're not, then they could very well face disciplinary action.
Loss of jobs leading to exactly what these TUs are protesting against. The irony...

So thats my opinion as well, that its unprotected and there is no way to make it protected.. but a number of articles have referred to it as a protected strike which baffles me.

South Africa's two largest trade union federations, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU), plan to strike and demonstrate nationwide on 24 August 2022.

The strike has been scheduled to demand action to address high fuel prices, load shedding and the high cost of living. COSATU plans to protest in the following areas:

Cape Town (Western Cape Province): Gathering at the Prasa Metro Rail offices from 09:00.

Durban (KwaZuluNatal Province): Gather at King Dinuzulu Park at 09:00 before marching to Durban City Hall.

East London (Eastern Cape Province): Gather at the Victoria Ground Stadium in King Williams Town at 09:00 before marching to the Bhisho center. The march will end at 14:00.

Kimberley (Northern Cape Province): March from 09:00 in the Roodepan, Open Arena (Galashewe), Old Greenpoint (N8), and Pick n Pay open space (Seochoareng Street) areas. Then gather in Kemo open space from 11:00 before marching to the premier's office between 13:00 and 14:00.

Klerksdorp (North West Province): March from the medical center to the Department of Minerals from 09:00.

Mahikeng (North West Province): March from the Montshiwa Stadium to the provincial legislature from 09:00.

Old Phuthaditjhaba (Free State Province): Gather at Old Phuthaditjhaba Square at 10:00 before marching to the municipality offices.

Polokwane (Limpopo Province): Gather at SABC Park from 09:00 before marching to the premier's office, the Treasury, Department of Mineral Resources, and Eskom offices.

Rustenburg (North West Province): March from the main taxi rank to the Rustenburg municipal offices from 09:00.

Tshwane (Gauteng Province): Gather at Burgers Park at 09:00 before marching to the Union Buildings.

Witbank (Mpumalanga Province): March from Broadway towards the Eskom Park from 09:00.

SAFTU plans to join the primary gathering in Tshwane; however, the union intends to gather from 06:00 in Burgers Park and arrive at the Union Buildings at 10:00. SAFTU may also organize protests elsewhere in the country.

Even protected strikes are no work no pay.. the protection boils down to not being able to be disciplined for being AWOL basically.

I'd love to join in on this, but I have to earn a fckng living. Anyone joining this strike deserves to have hardships in life. If you want to have a meaningful strike start burning down the ministers homes. Or stone them, whichever is easiest.
