Thanks Kalvaer. Yeah, Stellenbosch is not really the urban jungle one would hope for. Come to think of it that is why I stay here.

My vote is for Morpheos entry #2 :

Judging time.

I was recently having a discussion with my brother in law about what is a good photo? He told me that each photo is good in its own right, and it depends on what effect you are actually going for. If you are able to achieve that, then its is a good photo, Regardless if nobody else likes it. Certain photo's that I love, somebody else might hate.

Since I choose the topic, I had a preconceived idea of what "Urban Photography" was all about and I guess I am basing my decision on what effect I "wanted" to achieve.

First: Rouxenator
It captured MY ideal the best. I loved all the different angles which seem to pull you towards the centre of the image. So even if it wasn't 100% urban. Its the closest to what I feel the topic was about.

Second: Morpheos
I loved this photo and there is nothing wrong with it. Other than to me it fits more into a night time category, than urban photography.

Third: Tosser
An awesome shot (BTW, do you have a link to a bigger image. I don't have you on my contact list in Flickr yet so couldn't see it). Though for me personally again, It has to much rural and mountain in for the topic as I envisioned it

PS: I know there were many others that wanted to take but never submitted. I'll start a thread once I get some of mine downloaded and edited so hopefully we can show of more of this topic if anyone is interested?

Thanks Kalvaer !

If I was in Alberton I would definitely take my urban shot from inside Kim Hau (the Chinese place) over looking the street - it has the perfect urban feel for me. Last time I was there I took a few shots from the deck at Boma and they also had a nice urban feel to it - Alberton is a beautiful city - you have the perfect location for such pictures :p

Perhaps in the future we can have the person that decides on the theme post a few pictures of what they envisage around the theme? Obviously it will not be taken into account for the draw but it will give a nice perspective on things.

OK, time for a new theme, this time it will be machines. It can be your computer, games console, a car or any other machine that you think is awesome and that you want to capture in a memorable or creative way.

It does have some lovely places, JHB central is also awesome. But not the safest. We were to busy this weekend to go, and Claire wanted to go to Newtown yesterday on her way home to take photo's herself. But it was almost 6pm and I refused to let her go alone so she couldn't get her entry in. But we will still try go together sometime and see what we can get.

Nice topic for this week. I already have some idea's for it. Now just to get of my lazy rear and go take them

I like that topic. We build all our own machinery at work so this could be interesting.

Thanks Kalvaer - I seem to be having an odd problem with flickr. Bit pressed for time but will sort it out & send you a linky. Will also add you to my flickr contacts list. I agree with you about the winning shot , well done Roux, another great pic from your matchbox cam :)
Like the new topic Roux - I think you gonna struggle with this one being out in the middle of the winelands!

Thanks Tosser - altough my shot was taken with more of a shoebox cam (the Kodak) than a matchbox (the regular Nokia).

Coincidentally the 'machine' that inspired all this was an old grapecrusher I saw earlier this week on the family farm - so the winelands has some well aged machines

Funny you should say that Roux. My first thought for the topic was our old hammer mill and the tractor that are standing under the "afdak" (and for the life of me I cant remember the English word for that and I am English) on my Dads farm

Just need to get them to move it out and put it in a nice location to take a photo of it

These will have to be my Two entries. Rain stopped for a while so I ran out to try.

Oh and yes.. I'm experimenting with, off camera flash lighting techniques.

I like this shot: nice & ominous for me...

Unfortunately I do not have a good enough post for this weeks entry. I did take a couple of shot's, but they are simply not good enough so I will not submit them. I was also thinking of odd angles or off camera flash techniques, but could not get around to trying them.

It does seem as if this thread has gone rather quiet of late, but no matter, I do enjoy the weekly challenge so I would like to continue if possible.

Maybe everyone is simply caught up with end of year stuff and hasn't been able to dedicate enough time to the things they enjoy?

Yeah it has been a little slow. Perhaps it should be a monthly thing ?

Anyways - this weeks winner is mysterious and a machine but you will not find Scooby and the gang close by (thanks heavens) :

Thanks Roux, I think its also this time of year as mentioned. Everything is wrapping up and most people are just trying to get through to the December holidays (at least those of us who get time off this time of year), And the rest are all trying to finish exams, or mark all the exams in my wifes case.

I know I'm out of here in a month to join my Wife at CERN, and I'm sure others are also planning on vacation plans.

Anyway.. Since we all seem to be busy at work and things. How about "People at work" for a topic. This doesn't have to be people AT your work, But people working, ie: Contruction, Road works, etc.

Hmm ok... Do we cancel the photo comp? Or just put everything on hold until next year?
