Can we get patent trolls in SA like A Patent Troll Wants to Charge You for Emailing Your Scans! or is this just crazy USA laws?

We could have patent trolls in South Africa, but it's unlikely.

Technically, the Patents Act specifically excludes computer programs.

So, you shouldn't be able to patent something like scanning documents to PDF and emailing them.

But practically, the South African patents office doesn't scrutinise patents like in other countries.

This means that patent trolls could patent all sorts of things.

But anyone could successfully challenge the patent if it isn't novel, inventive, and doesn’t have utility.
