At what age legally does child support, maintenance come to an end?
I would appreciate not the, "it never ends" answer due to circumstances I am not going in to.
Legally, if I with held child support one month after his 18th birthday, could I be in contravention of the maintenance arrangement?

Oh yes, I am asking on behalf of a friend :)

Sorry Refraction, you'd have to chat to a family law expert about that. You can ask your local law society to point you in the right direction.

You remain liable to support the child for as long as they are not self-sufficient economically. For example if the child is 25 but cannot find a job.

Finally, now we don't need faux legal advice from you-know-who.

In my experience, the majority of people who give ad hoc legal advice on the forums, have never been patently wrong in the advice that they have given. It is obviously not that easy to give someone proper advice based only on what they write in a thread. Best idea is always to consult with an attorney.

The ones who give faux legal advice are the people who neither studied nor practiced law, yet has an opinion on everything under the sun. They know who they are.

I suspect that if they choose to study then it might take a while. Its probably similar to the med aid rules - under those (well the old ones anyway). People up to 26 could be classified as dependants if studying full time. That being said - this is a wild guess.

That doesn't sound right to me. What if they just sit on their ass all day - its hardly reasonable that you'd be required to support then till their 50 y/o.

We could have patent trolls in South Africa, but it's unlikely.

Technically, the Patents Act specifically excludes computer programs.

So, you shouldn't be able to patent something like scanning documents to PDF and emailing them.

But practically, the South African patents office doesn't scrutinise patents like in other countries.

This means that patent trolls could patent all sorts of things.

But anyone could successfully challenge the patent if it isn't novel, inventive, and doesn’t have utility.

Thanks for the reply good to know just hope this doesn't hit our shores.

I think you are compelled to support them even if they choose to sit on their asses or study into their late 20s.

My sister and her husband couldn't afford to get divorced because they have 2 such "children". One is 25 and the other 27 . They don't pay rent or contribute to household expenses. My sister, their mom, pays for their petrol, cigarettes, booze and even books and pays for her 25 year old sons anniversary dinner with his girlfriend. As a couple the parents are loaded as 2 separate families their lifestyles would be severely affected.

My sister says she can afford to spoil her children and she enjoys it so why not?

Welcome, Michalsons Attorneys.
Just a quick question: I take it you have heard the expression, "When the revolution comes, the lawyers will be the first against the wall". My question is: Does this make you nervous? :D

Thanks for joining. It would be good to have some legal insight directly on the forums about the ICT stories of the day.

Legally, a parent is obliged to financially support their children (even though the children are adults themselves) if they are not self-sufficient. There is no cut-off date.

Sure there are lazy people out there who just could not be bothered getting a job and would rather sponge off their parents. So in some instances it has more to do with the relationship you have with your kids than the actual legal position. In plain language: sometimes you have to tell your kid to get off his butt and find a job :)

Please also remember that adult children have a reciprocal obligation to support their aging parents.
