Well point and boreholes in CT

Taking a chance here since the last post was in 2024. Is anyone in Cape Town (Rondebosch/Crawford/Thornton side) using a well point for their pool? I’ve noticed my well point water is quite brown and was wondering what the best filtration method would be to make it usable for the pool.

Someone suggested pumping the water into a JoJo tank, adding pool shock, and then letting it sit for a day before transferring it to the pool. Has anyone tried this, or does anyone have other advice or filtration recommendations?

Would really appreciate any advice! Thanks in advance.

It will depend on the particulate. If you fill up a glass with the water and leave it overnight does it settle? If it does then thats the cheapest way to go about it. Keep a full JoJo tank and top up the pool from the middle of the tank after you left it to settle for a while.

And maybe test if little fishies can survive in the glass?

It may be hgh iron content, the process you suggest sounds right but make sure you add a chemical to get the iron to settle.

Actually haven’t tested that. I’ve filled a glass full now will check it tomorrow. The water just looks dirty lol light brownish yellow so will see if anything settles. Thinking of taking a sample to the pool shop or something to have it tested. Water will only be used to fill up the pool

A lot of the rivers around the cape have that brown tint. Its effectively tea from the plant matter. Testing is always good so I would do that as well but you should get more info from one of the places that tests well/borehole water.

First thing to do if using it for anything besides garden irrigation is to get the SANS241 water test done.

There's a lab here in Somerset West called Bemlab that did mine. I think the cost now is just over R1k.

It will also give you an idea of what sort of filtration you need if you ever want to utilize it for more than just irrigation.

Thanks - would I need to do this test even if I don’t intend drinking the water?

I would still. Ecoli is a real issue with ground water. Not so much with deeper boreholes. The SANS241 test includes chemical and biological tests. Samples need to be delivered soon after collection for the biological testing. 500ml is normally enough but you can check with them how much they need.

My chemical test results. I can't find the biological test results now but everything was within the required range suitable for drinking. The only real issue I had was low iron and copper content.

Other than that my water quality is excellent with 315 total dissolved solids c with the norm being 1 200mg/lScreenshot_20211118-092836_Acrobat%20for%20Samsung~2.jpg

Going on nearly 4 years and the well is still going strong. I use maybe 1kl of municipal water for the year and it's normally because I'm working on the setup and I bypass the system.

We tried bottled water a few months ago when we were out and we can't drink it or any other tap water. We now take 2 x 5l water from the well if we go on holiday or long trips for drinking water.

Sorry for jumping in here but I noticed that you only use about 1kl of municipal water. We also have our own water & average about 2kl of municipal water. I have not gone off the Grid as electricity is needed to run the pump and we all know about load shedding. However in our area we have had many burst water pipes lately. I was shocked to receive two municipal accounts during this period, one for 34 kL and another for 54 kl. The municipal water has not been replaced in the 40 years that we have lived here in Bellville. My appeal was rejected after they sent someone out to test the meter. His methed of testing was to place his finger on the meter & run some water? He says he can feel that the meter is working? I understand that when they reconnect after repairs have been carried out, air in the system can spin your water meter reading? I am the only one In our street still with an old water meter.
Unfortunately it's difficult trying to explain to the lady at walk in centre my problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You have to make sure you don't have a leak on your side of the water meter somewhere. That is a common problem.

Thanks I did. With that amount of kl's I am sure I would have noticed a leak on my side of the meter.

Yes. When account received I got plumbers to check. The meter was not registering any abnormal water water been used to the amount shown on account. Thereafter the same pipe in street burst just out my property. During the last six months we have had numerous pipe burst in the street which the municipality has had numerous attempts to fix an aged system.

Sounds like you have fallen victim to the air in the pipes spinning the meter gremlin, did you mention to the municipality that you use your own water and that there's been all these mainline repairs in your road?
