"Sex workers are under siege in this country."

Sex worker advocacy groups have raised concerns about safety in the wake of the discovery of six decomposed bodies in a Johannesburg vehicle workshop.

On Sunday, police discovered six decomposed bodies at a panel-beating workshop in the inner city. The women were believed to have been sex workers.

A 21-year-old man was arrested in connection with the deaths.

The Sex Workers Education and Advocacy Taskforce (Sweat) and the Sisonke National Sex Worker Movement say several sex workers in the Johannesburg inner city have gone missing this year.

There was a reason why this industry was considered criminal activity and banned before. You decriminalize it, and you open it up to things like this. The industry will get a lot worse for those girls as more syndicates will get involved in it. A matter of be careful what you ask for, you may just get it...

Not so. Prime examples are the Netherlands and Germany where it is legal. The women have the protection of the police because of that. Customers are assured of disease free prostitutes due to mandatory medical inspections and tourists mingle in Amsterdam's red light district and on Hamburg's Reeperbahn. The Reeperbahn has a police station dedicated to the protection of the prostitutes.

Dawidswache police station on the Reeperbahn:

And note the decent crowd on the Reeperbahn without the seedy elements:

You can't compare SA to any European country.

Then End.

In that case we should criminalise living in your own house. Imagine zero home invasions and burglaries

Driving can go next. Don't need those pesky hijackings

Ever been there? Bet you haven't. You can have a beer at a pavement cafe and watch the crowds stroll past. Absolutely safe.
Actually have been the The Netherlands more times than I care to remember. Twice since May 2022 and another trip in November. My comment is more to your assuming that there is not a single seedy person in the image. That's an impossible claim.

And you expect Bheki Cele, you know the most competent minister of police on this planet, to have the capability of doing this? Or do you expect the healthcare system to manage this as well, you know considering it is the best run and most well-resourced public healthcare system in the world.

South Africa has an STD epidemic, the state is barely able to keep up with HIV and now you want to legitimise the activity that would turbocharge the spread of HIV?

In a different country with a functioning police force, functioning healthcare sector and a growing economy, I would easily be in favour of some limited version of sex work being legitimised, but not South Africa. It would just make things worse for the woman who participate in it.

The pic is of the Reeperbahn. Far busier than the Amsterdam red light district with women sitting in windows and no other night life.

The Reeperbahn has only one short street like that of Amsterdam behind and across the road from the police station in Herbertstraße in the well over kilometer long Reeperbahn with many side streets with many pubs, restaurants, theatres and a casino.

It's definitely not seedy and the loudest people there are always Yank tourists from the bible belt.

Not to any other country. But I recently watched a series about Haiti and natural disasters aside, it gave me an uncomfortable feeling.

And Haiti has been self governing as an independent republic since 1859. No blaming of the honky for their situation.
