LIBERIAN SECURITY FORCES SEAL SLUM TO HALT EBOLA

Security forces deployed Wednesday to enforce a quarantine around a slum in the Liberian capital, stepping up the government's fight to stop the spread of Ebola and unnerving residents.

Liberia has the highest death toll of the four West African countries affected by the dreaded disease, and its number of cases is rising the fastest. President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf ordered the quarantine and imposed a nighttime curfew that begins Wednesday, saying that authorities have not been able to curtail the spread of Ebola in the face of defiance of their recommendations. She also ordered entertain

"These measures are meant to save lives," she said in an address Tuesday night.

Ebola is spread through contact with bodily fluids, but relatives have been caring for the sick at home in some cases and burial practices that involve touching the body have continued. There is no cure and no licensed treatment for the disease; health workers can only separate the sick from the healthy.

During the raid this weekend in West Point slum, bloody items were stolen and potential Ebola patients fled, raising fears the disease would spread out of control in a densely populated area. It was not clear why people would steal items that might spread infection, but there are still many misconceptions about how dangerous the disease is and how it is spread.

On Wednesday, armed soldiers and riot police began blocking anyone from entering or leaving the neighborhood. A resident saw a coast guard boat patrolling waters around the area.

Mistrust of the government runs high in West Point, and, as frustration with government's inability to stop the spread of the disease grows, there is potential for unrest.

One resident, Richard Kieh, told The Associated Press by phone that the community was in "disarray" following the arrival of forces on Wednesday morning.

"Prices of things have been doubled here," he said.

Ebola has killed at least 1,229 of the more than 2,200 people it has sickened in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria in the outbreak, according to World Health Organizations figures.

The outbreak is currently the most severe in Liberia and Sierra Leone, but the U.N. health agency said that there were encouraging signs that the tide was beginning to turn in Guinea. There is also hope that Nigeria has managed to contain the disease to only a few cases

Nigeria's health minister, Onyebuchi Chukwu, said Tuesday that a fifth person had died of the disease in that country. All of Nigeria's reported cases so far have been people who had direct contact with a Liberian-American man who was already infected when he arrived in the country on an airliner.

So both Nigeria and Lagos have quarantined slums.

Harsh realities here - this virus is going to decimate the poorest - it's going to rage through these communities like wildfire.

Two guys in industrial hazmat suits - or a piece of heavy machinery that can accidentally rip the body in two or leave a arm behind...
Simpler would be to drop a skip on the street corner marked 'Put body here'.

Ah, true. Haven't thought of dismemberment.

Working in hazmat suits is a real drag, hence why I thought of using machinery.

But the skip is the simplest solution. Just need a tractor (or bakkie) to pull to the dumping/funeral/cremation site after loading it up.

Cremate in the skip.

Anyway, dismemberment is probably the least of your worries. Anyone who dies from EVD is going to leave virus particles EVERYWHERE. You bleed out. That blood is contagious. You sweat like a mofo. Thrash around, convulsions - throwing droplets everywhere.

Just for interest's sake - how do our locals treat their dead?

Xhosa: http://toughtimestransport.blogspot.com/2011/12/xhosa-funeral-traditions.html

We must never burn our dead. We must always bring them back to the place they belong to,
so that they can be reunited with all the ancestors and sleep in the ground they were taken
from.
There we put them into the grave. We also put food for them and their walking stick and
other things into the grave that they might need.

Walking stick... because the afterlife leaves you crippled?

No, remember a walking stick is a cultural weapon. It's so you can go and raid the next village in heaven and steal their wives.

RESIDENTS RIOT AS POLICE QUARANTINE LIBERIA SLUM TO CURB EBOLA VIRUS

Riots broke out in Monrovia after the government quarantined Liberia's biggest slum in an effort to curb the Ebola epidemic, local newspaper Front Page Africa reported Wednesday.

Residents clashed with armed security guards and police officers, who had cordoned off the West Point slum, home to an estimated 75,000 residents.

Officers also blocked off the Waterside Market, one of the Liberian capital's key market places, due to its proximity to the slum.

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf order the area quarantined after 37 Ebola patients fled an isolation ward at the weekend.

West Point residents had broken into the quarantine centre Saturday and freed the patients, who were suspected of being infected with the virus.

The president also imposed a curfew between 9 pm (2100 GMT) and 6 am.

This comes after reports of dead bodies being dumped in streets at night, as overburdened authorities struggle to collect corpses.

Johnson Sirleaf also ordered the town of Dolo'S, on Liberia's north coast, be quarantined.

"It has become necessary to impose additional sanctions to curb the spread (of Ebola) overall and particularly in those areas of intensity," said Johnson Sirleaf.

Many Liberians continued to deny the existence of Ebola and disregarded prevention measures, she said.

Liberia has reported 834 Ebola cases, according to the WHO. Of those, 466 have died.

Nigeria's toll from Ebola meanwhile hit five as another death was reported, according to the local newspaper Vanguard, while Liberia imposed a night curfew and quarantined its largest slum.

Nigerian doctor Ameyo Stella Adadevoh contracted the virus while treating Liberian government consultant Patrick Sawyer, the first person to die of Ebola in Nigeria, said Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu.

"(Adadevoh was) one of the primary contacts ... the most senior doctor who participated in the management of (Sawyer)," Chukwu added.

Nigeria has reported 15 suspected or confirmed Ebola cases, according to the World Health Organization, while almost 170 further patients were under observation.

In West Africa, 2,240 suspected or confirmed cases and 1,229 deaths have been reported, the WHO reported.

The current outbreak is caused by the most lethal strain in the family of Ebola viruses.

Ebola causes massive haemorrhaging and has a fatality rate of up to 90 per cent. It is transmitted through contact with blood and other body fluids.

Instant mass revolt.... especially Diepsloot. Krugersdorp highway will have to be closed.

Not sure if Alex is near any highways, if so, these will also have to be closed.

Causing mass traffic disruptions.

Ebola death toll rises to 1 350 - WHO

Monrovia - Security forces acting on the president's orders used scrap wood and barbed wire to seal off 50 000 people inside their crowded slum on Wednesday in an attempt to contain the Ebola outbreak, which has killed 1 350 people and counting.

Getting more and more desperate. Imagine being a healthy person sealed off in there.

These large public gatherings and clashes with police is a utopia for the ebola.
