Indeed, lyttelton is a safe palce, because when the new gov came, they did not close your police station.
I'm not that far from you, but in our neighbourhood as I said, and the same goes for the rest of the new suburbs in PTA, THERE IS NO police stations. With a bloody large part of the city's population in these suburbs.

You are just bloody lucky mate, you got a home in a safe suburb, of which there are only 4 in the whole city, I think you should, just like taboo should, get out of your comfort zone more often.

I've seen whats out there mate, and if you think there is no crime just because there is little crime in your area, you are freaking blind man!
Open those eye-lids my friend!

^^^--- Lyttelton Station Stats.
Obviously ithey don't cover only lyttelton, afaik, they cover quite a large area, but still, some of those crimes would have been in lyttelton itself.
And, rape and murder is rising...

Which suburbs are they? Littleton, Garsfontein, ...?

Brooklyn has police station but they certainly not safe...

But I still say, when you look around be Menlyn, Lyttleton, Sandton, or the V&A waterfront - people are not hiding in their houses afraid to come out, if that's where you are, come out a bit and start living with the rest of us

I wanted to add "and start dying with the rest of us too", but then I recall all these people surprised in their house by a burglar or two (like that one that stabbed the dude just as he woke up with the robber standing over him), dont they lock their bedroom doors and stuff, maybe these people arent afraid of crime and then they become easy victims because they think they safe in their houses.

(excuse me if my rambling is incoherent, I REALLY need some sleep)

people on this forum have made mass assumptions about me. In my line of work i see lots of crime, definitely more than the average South African, prolly more than most of you on this forum. Granted this may have made me a bit blase about crime, but

Crime has directly affected members of my close family

My sister was killed in her house - stabbed over 20 times
houses have been broken into and cars stolen
some recently - most over ten years ago

I am not blind to the situation, anyone who looks at the statistics would be stupid to say there is no problem.

But I still say, when you look around be Menlyn, Lyttleton, Sandton, or the V&A waterfront - people are not hiding in their houses afraid to come out, if that's where you are, come out a bit and start living with the rest of us

Also - I am not a member nor do I support any political party -

Sorry to hear about your losses.

I'm glad that we agree on a few points, that crime is a big problem for one.

I also see your point about being desensitized (sp?) a bit.

I certainly don't stay in my home all the time :) I go out whenever I have the chance, I feel safe in Hatfield, and inside the menlyn shopping mall, it's when you drive home when a bit of fear kicks in. Stopping at a robot next to a open piece of land at 1:00 in the morning is a bit dangerous these days.
But a few years ago me and my friends could walk to the local spur, enjoy a meal, a beer, whatever and walk home at twelve, that's not the case anymore.
At night, when I go outside for a smoke, there is absolutely noone in sight.
You have to keep your doors locked in my neigbourhood, you can't even stand and work in the garage with the door open at night, seeing as there has been two or three cases where people working in their garages was attacked and then robbed.
It's not exactly the kind of lifestyle you want to live, not being able to hang around in your own yard, or work in your own garage.
It's unsafe man, but it doesn't look as if it's going to be changing soon, not for my hood anyways.

Even though times are not good, I doubt if people don't go out(to clubs, bars, restaurants, movies, etc.).

I think you will understand what I'm trying to say here.

Which suburbs are what? Safe, unsafe, covered by which police station?

I think you mean the safe suburbs? Please just slap me if I am wrong.

Can't remember exactely, there was a article in Die Beeld or Rapport where they showed 4 suburbs stats and they seemed real safe, I think it is valleria, wonderboom. but they both have police stations in the area.

It should help to have a police station nearby. Not like here, the closest one is about 15KM away AFAIK.

That's wat I think they should do too. :)

Spread the police around the whole city, don't bundle them up in a few areas and expect them to spread around the city themselves, the more stations, the shorter their trips would be to and from patrolling, crime scenes etc.
Also, I think that a few small police stations could help immensly, because that particular station could get reservists for their own area, people will be more willing to join as reservists to patrol their own suburb and nearby suburbs.

Why doesn't everyone just move to Lyttleton? We can all walk to the mall. We can all braai every second night. We can all go for night swims. We can all send our wives on foot to the shopping mall alone. Then we could all change our logins to x-something, we could all read the Lyttleton daily and we could all pretend that the whole of South Africa is exactly the same as Lyttleton.

Aha - once again, it 'seems' to be getting worse - absolutely no basis for your assumption, therefore the assumption is deemed inadmissable in any factual debate around crime stats

Unfortunately I don't have the luxury of living in a country where the government releases accurate, undoctored statistics so yes I do have to rely on more anecdotal evidence and conjecture but that's hardly my fault is it. Maybe I just need to find a better way of communicating with my local police station. :D
