Big problem with online driver's licence renewals in South Africa — why one province has steered clear

Most of South Africa's provinces still don't offer motorists the ability to book and pay for driver's licence card renewals online, more than seven months after the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) launched the capability.

Since the RTMC introduced online driving licence renewals on eNatis in February 2022, only motorists in Gauteng and the Eastern Cape have been able to use the feature.

My impression of the staff when I got my renewal was they're actually very friendly and helpful but are frustrated by the digital systems they depend on being down so often. People direct their frustrations at the person who's trying to help them but who's hands are tied.

It's probably the same person that voted them in.

Just do away completely with the eye test and the fingerprint checking, and allow the process to be completed fully online without ever having to leave your house. Then courier the card to your house. If banks can do this with bank cards, I can't see any reason why they can't do the same with licence cards.

For the Western Cape does one just do a walk-in at the nearest traffic department, no booking can or should be made?

Is the below post from Park@82 mostly relevant (he went to Sandton DLTC) for those of us in the W.Cape?

<snip>

I did eye tests at Specsavers beforehand - this was free.

Even though you have the eye tests done, you still have to queue at the eye tests section because they do the photos, finger prints and other data capturing there as well.
After this you need to queue at the payment section.

What to take:
- The completed form that you get when booking online.
- The booking info.
- Your ID book and old drivers license card (I only needed the ID book because I had lost old my card).
- A copy of your ID (mine was not certified and it was ok)
- 2x ID photos (got some from Q-Photo beforehand) they used one on the application and one for my temp license.
- Debit or credit card. Note that Sandton accepts card payment only. It was R228 for the renewal and R70 to get a temp license. Akasia in PTA only wanted cash IIRC.

They said to collect in 6 weeks' time. Holding thumbs.

Wasn't this booking system barely functional? How is it saving people time?

Last I checked there is no point getting an eye test done at an optometrist if you're in the Western Cape because they don't accept them.

To renew you just turn up and wait in line.

Western Cape is easy. The traffic departments actually function properly. I was at the Fish Hoek Traffic Department about 2 weeks ago to do a change of ownership and I was in and out of there in 10 minutes.

I renewed my driver's licence card at Fish Hoek a couple of weeks back. What a pleasure compared with Hillstar. I went with the Spec Savers eye test form. There were 2 people in the office and those who had the eye test form were directed to one person. We didn't have to wait for those who still needed to be checked. You just turn up there. You can get photos next door at the library.
