Yes you can.
Leitmotif, I can't agree with you here. You *can't* be prepared all the time.

BUT you can be better prepared than the guy with his head in the sand.

Yes, the criminals might still "get" you. Some would say that that proves that having a gun is not the solution -- but of course they're wrong. Having a gun and the training and the mindset to use the thing leads to a *lot* of _not_ having to use the thing at all. I believe it shows in your attitude -- knowing that you can protect yourself makes you look less like meat.

The only reason they're better prepared is because people aren't prepared at all.

That. What Leitmotif is saying.

Well how often do you see 3 lines about a murder on page 5. That's pretty bad too.

I never said it was a good thing, just that it could've been worse :/ it's amazing how many of us love this country so much, we risk our lives everyday. Though some of us have no choice and can't leave.

Anything that convinces our government that crime is a serious problem for ALL South Africans (not just those white whingers ;) ) is probably a good thing in the long term. Unfortunately, I believe the 2010 world cup will go off without incident.
In 2010, the government will probably spend a few billion getting military types on the street to watch every street corner. They'll have surveillance drones & Rooivalk helicopters patrolling our skies and policemen on motorbikes patrolling all the venues. Crime will drop to almost nothing for a month or two. Once the world cup is done, the money will dry up and within a few days, it will be business as usual.

A similar thing happened when US President Clinton visited Cape Town. I've never seen the streets so clear of vagrants ever. Too bad the extra security disappeared the day Clinton left.
