I had this exact conversation with someone yesterday. I ordinarily smoke Stuyvesant Blue which is about R40. Not a chance I'm buying those ever again when I can get JFK at R13.

And most I've spoken to share similar reservations. All this lockdown achieved is drive people away from the BAT/big name brands for good. So once the ban is lifted, people will be hard pressed to justify paying the normal price of their regular brand vs the normal price of something they've been forced to smoke for the last 2 months which they've gotten so used to during that time.

Yeah, I'd keep smoking them for sure if they stayed decent. I was smoking B&H before lockdown. One often finds with these black market smokes, though, that the quality tends to change from month to month. Back in the day, way before this lockdown kak, I also used to smoke black market smokes out of choice and you'd often find they'd be fine one carton and the next carton would be miff. Anyway, have only been able to find JFK once where I am.

If you in Cape Town, R500 for a bag thingie. Not sure if that is expensive or not.
I am in Cape Town, norhtern suburbs on the border between Bellville and Brackenfell. R500 is really expensive, but at this point I also really don't care!

Also, you can't just dry it and smoke it. Tobacco companies do a LOT to tobacco to make it even mildly palatable.
Yeah, that is the issue, the plant needs to mature and grow, that takes a few months and then the leaves need to be dried and cured and that can take years, lets not even mention trying to ferment your tobacco leaves. Still I wonder if it will be better than **** cigarettes!!

We got lucky this past Friday and got word from a friend that his friend was selling out his smokes from his shop. We got several packs of Rembrandt Van Rijn, Mills, Texan, RG, menthol, some other brands that I can't remember at the moment at a normal price. All and all worked out to about 6 cartons of smokes. I also got a bunch of pipe tobacco for Oupa and got several bags of rolling tobacco. With rationing we should make it till level one.
My sister in law in KZN said that her supply guy is shutting down. He says it is too risky now and that he was paying R25,000 for the stock that he was normally getting and now his supplier is asking R35,000 for the same amount of stock.

If all else fails...

"The Soweto Business Access (SBA) have joined in on calls for the cigarette ban to be lifted during the nationwide lockdown, and said that children are being lured in to smoking crack cocaine as it is cheaper to buy on the black market than cigarettes. "

This is really really sad, obviously I do not want children smoking or doing any drugs, but cigarettes would definitely be the lesser of two evils!

Today I stooped to new levels...have never seen these in my life before and they taste as bad as they look. Our housemate came home with them so have no idea how much they cost.

Ive been struggling to get cigs the last few days for some reason...prices are outrageous and my normal suppliers all seem out of stock. Then the suppliers suppliers seem to let them down haha. I’m pretty desperate at this point - and angry, frustrated and all the other emotions of forced nicotine withdrawal. Hoping for a break tomorrow.

Meet the lucky 666’s or The Devil smokes - which ever way you think. :giggle: No manufacturers listed.

The cigarettes go off by themselves if you don't pull. It's a thing, and it works normally. Someone falls asleep with a cigarette in their hand, it goes off

Ahhh the scanner thing on my phone linked to something on google when I was taking the pic but I closed it to make sure my photo was not blurry. I will get the box tomorrow from my housemate and see what scans. :)

That is actually atrocious... A hardcore drug is cheaper than a simple fag.... Well done mama... Are you trying to outdo mbeki in terms of the number of south african deaths you are responsible for?

As far as I remember, they added that in around 2012? I believe it was to stop stompies reigniting and starting fires, the big legal brands like Marlboro have it too.

Cant go wrong with a pack of Jin Ling cigarettes...... no way any government can trace these they come from Russia, have a name straight out of a 80’s Chinese kung fu movie and are blended with the finest U.S tobacco !
