What are you doing to combat load shedding in your household?

Just wanted to open a discussion about what measures you are taking to beat load shedding? generators? UPS? wind turbines? solar? Grid tied systems?

What is working for you? What have you tried that didn't work?

Be interesting to see what other people are trying. Also if anyone knows of any good deals going around for what ever alternates?...

I'm taking the E-toll approach.. gas for cooking, candles for lights and that's it.

Simple but effective! I personally think the first thing everyone should change is electric hob to gas... The worst would be to be hit while you are cooking your dinner. so frustrating.

Pretty much the same - will also organise do have a braai / cook something on the weber on nights when load shedding might happen in the evenings for us.

Would love to go the solar route but held back by 2 things:

1) Money - I don't have that sort of cash @ my disposal.

2) I suspect the body corporate wouldn't be too happy with me covering the roof in solar panels.

There have been thousands of threads regarding load-shedding solutions, from Gas to UPS to Genies to Solar etc.

I've removed my pool pump and turned the pool into a natural habitat for wildlife.

Just asking: Is there any danger in using Gas? I'm always scared when it is suggested, at one time a gas-tank we were using couldn't be closed, so we took it outside to release the gas safely.

Make sure phone, tablets and laptop are always fully charged.

Small gas camping light and a headlamp.

One other two programmes lined up to watch on a tablet.
