That's annoying... I struggled though Cibola Burn as it felt like a filler story.

I'm only about 50-60 pages in so it might get better soon. At the moment, everyone is still shattered from the aftermath of the previous book...them processing those events and settling down to the new circumstances is not really interesting (to me anyway).

Enlightenment now, the case for human progress - Steven Pinker.

Caught the tail end of a Pinker interview on CNN this morning.

I started off with my usual "Pinker, you *******" comment, but had to revise my opinion somewhat by the end of the interview.

I spoke about two series I really enjoyed a while ago: Will Wight's Cradle series and the Coiling Dragon series by I Eat Tomatoes.

What I didn't know was that these series are actually part of a genre: Wuxia. Wuxia literally means "martial hero". Think Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: People whose martial arts are so developed that they can do incredible things by harnessing their qi, like leap incredible distances and punch through walls.

Then, there's one step further: Xianxia. Xianxia means "immortal hero" so it's a fantasy-fied version of wuxia: Demons, dragons and other magic beasts, demigods and gods, etc. Basically wuxia is where a guy can punch so hard you can almost hear a sonic boom. Xianxia is where a guy can punch so hard he can literally punch a hole in space and time.

So, if you like fantasy but you'd also like the hero to deliver a kung fu kick to a dragon's face, check out these genres.

^ What a tosser.

Looking at the artist's other work - it's pretty clear he's not the problem.

Not sure if this is the right thread...

Terry Goodkind, doing what he does...

https://www.resetera.com/threads/fantasy-author-terry-goodkind-publicly-shames-his-own-cover-artist-on-social-media.25564/

Classy as always....

I follow a couple of people who work in publishing and apparently he had a grudge against one of them and got them fired. And this cover art thing is definitely just the tip of the iceberg as far as bad behavior goes.

I actually got the 2nd book in his new series to review. Was going to buy the first before this happened, but now I'm not keen on ever doing that.

If he's anything remotely like the characters he writes, to paraphrase the immortal Harry Dean Stanton, "He's got issues."

Must admit, not a fan of his books but I can see how they might be popular, that's hes got the idea that he has somehow transcended fantasy....:crylaugh:

"First of all, I don't write fantasy. I write stories that have important human themes. They have elements of romance, history, adventure, mystery and philosophy. Most fantasy is one-dimensional. It's either about magic or a world-building. I don't do either."

"What I have done with my work has irrevocably changed the face of fantasy. In so doing I've raised the standards. I have not only injected thought into a tired empty genre, but, more importantly, I've transcended it showing what more it can be-and is so doing spread my readership to completely new groups who don't like and wont ready typical fantasy. Agents and editors are screaming for more books like mine" - Terry Goodkind

I tried the one that was made into a tv show and didn't like it. Lol transcended? Not based on the sword of truth unless he's transcended in an opposite direction

Great listen that with some good humour peppered in amongst all the tragedies of war and politics.

It was your recommendation that made me pick it up, much appreciated :). The e-book has been on my list for a while but never though about the audio book until you mentioned it.

Re-reading knife of never letting go while waiting for chapters of the translated novels to pile up.

Have recently read a lot of translated novels.
- Release that witch

And some MMORPG (the translated stuff sucked me into this genre):
- Shadow Hack
- MMORPG: Rebirth of the legendary guardian chapter

Not translated:
- The dragon's wrath < sadly the author died I think, he wrote under a pen name but no updates since end of 2016

To read:
- The shaman trials, also an MMORPG type book, not translated.

I think I got about 1/4 into his Sword of Truth series and gave up. The rest aren't great either.

Robin Hobb - Fool's Quest

A bit backwards starting with an author in the most recent of a stream of trilogies but don't feel like I've missed anything.
