nice! wish i could read that again with fresh eyes
It's a technical hard start as compared to Robin Hobb I read before this which was very smooth sailing.

Feels like it just started in the middle of nowhere.

But I think I got over that hump and into the meat of the book now.

Going to buy it, thanks for the tip!

You'll enjoy i'm sure..very refreshing and full of revelations, fills in big patches and rewrites much of our Western view of history....

It is heavy going with a lot of detail, deatiled maps,etc...but i don't mind that...I've always enjoyed the finer detail.

The Devil You Know - K. J. Parker.
Fun little book, can finish in an afternoon. Enjoyed seeing the demons perspective.
https://www.amazon.com/Devil-You-Know-K-Parker-ebook/dp/B016VCHZ0S

The greatest philosopher of all time is offering to sell his soul to the Devil. All he wants is twenty more years to complete his life’s work. After that, he really doesn’t care.

But the assistant demon assigned to the case has his suspicions, because the philosopher is Saloninus – the greatest philosopher, yes, but also the greatest liar, trickster and cheat the world has yet known; the sort of man even the Father of Lies can’t trust.

He’s almost certainly up to something; but what?

China Miéville, Stephen Baxter, Iain M. Banks, Kim Stanley Robinson, Gene Wolfe, Alastair Reynolds?

The Devil You Know - K. J. Parker.]

Looks interesting, and I always enjoy a good novella.

I'll second Iain M Banks

Why is the first book in the culture series so poorly rated? Always wanted to try but that first book rating is putting me off. I read a review where some guy suggested just start with the second book

Which book do you refer to as the first one? Banks writing on the Culture is more of a concept than a series, each book is self contained.

My favourites are: The Player of Games, The Use of Weapons and Against a Dark Background (not culture related).

Read Player of Games first. The order you read them isn't particularly important as each book is a self contained story set in the Culture. Banks could be quite experimental, sometimes it worked really well and sometimes not so well!

Exactly. I wouldn't suggest starting with Excession or Fearsome Enjin.

Oh, and State of the Art is a collection of short stories. For some bizarre reason I tried to read it like a single story the first time I read it. Couldn't make sense of the story at all...

I read Consider Phlebias (or whatever) and it sucked

Wasn't aware I thought it was one story over many books. Consider Phlebas is always listed as Culture #1
