I'll second Iain M Banks
Might need to try again one day. I found The Algebraist so damn tedious - especially the world building when he goes down to slow time to the world of those big creatures (on a gas giant planet or something).

Algebraist was definitely not one of my favorites, don't think I actually finished it.

I just started this on audio:

Am hoping for the usual high quality sfi-fi space opera from Reynolds

and this on my kindle

This is an interesting - books are released initially as a series with a new chapter every week, each written by a different author! Season one was great! Season 3 was just released.
see SerialBox.com. Episodes are released in both digital and audio format.

The Algebraist is definitely one of the worst of Banks' novels.

Did you read The Prefect/Aurora Rising first?

Interesting concept! Let us know if it actually holds together or becomes disjointed.

You could conceivably read Elysium Fire as a standalone, but it won't have nearly the same impact as when you read both. I re-read The Prefect just before starting Elysium Fire (reviewed here) and it added so much more to the experience. Most of the groundwork for the world/universe is done in the first one, while Elysium Fire is a far closer focus on Dreyfus and his team. Then you can throw in Revelation Space and adds yet another layer. I kinda went into a Reynolds reading binge after finishing Elysium Fire...

I did, a few years ago admittedly but I read a quick recap and it all came back to me. So far Elysium is pretty good though I'm only a couple of chapters in.

Season one of Tremontaine was good, I listened to the audio book version and it wasn't disjointed at all. I think the trick here is that it's written like a tv series in that there is a writing team - although different writers write specific episodes (or chapters) the entire team works out the complete plot and storyline together before the actual writing begins.

Thanks, nice website - I tend to agree with your reviews of those books I've read, so I'll definitely be looking out for those you scored highly which I haven't read yet!

An amazing (non-fiction) story about a young lady growing up rural Idaho as a Mormon but making it to Cambridge University.

A talented writer for someone her age...
