Thanks. I've finished Snow Crash, and started with a quick read: Kurt Vonnegut - Slaughterhouse Five

Done with this. Was totally not what I expected... was looking for a sci-fi, found this under that category, then read it was a anti-war book, and thought ugh, really don't want to read this... but then thought, it's short, just do it... and glad I did

I wished GoodReads had a half a star option, or changed to out of 10. Sometimes I feel I loved a book, but it's not quite a 5, but deserves more than a 4 :(

Alright, think I'll tackle Mark Lawrence's Broken Empire series next... enough of sci-fi for now :)

All Systems Red: The Murderbot Diaries - Martha Wells

Was a quick read and enjoyable, but I don't get why it's got all these awards:

Winner: 2017 Nebula Award for Best Novella
Winner: 2018 Alex Award
Finalist: 2017 Hugo Award for Best Novella
One of the Verge's Best Books of 2017
A New York Times Bestseller

Nothing about it was particularly 'wow'.

Some of his stuff is classed as sci-fi, and I don't think it's inaccurate, but I'd never tell someone that it's sci-fi without proper context.

Loved this scene:

American planes, full of holes and wounded men and corpses, took off backwards from an airfield in England. Over France, a few German fighter planes flew at them backwards, sucked bullets and shell fragments from some of the planes and crewmen. They did the same for wrecked American bombers on the ground, and those planes flew up backwards to join the formation.

The formation flew backwards over a German city that was in flames. The bombers opened their bomb bay doors, exerted a miraculous magnetism which shrunk the fires, gathered them into cylindrical steel containers, and lifted the containers into the bellies of the planes. The Germans below had miraculous devices of their own, which were long steel tubes. They used them to suck more fragments from the crewmen and planes. But there were still a few wounded Americans, though, and some of the bombers were in bad repair. Over France, though, German fighters came up again, made everything and everybody as good as new.

When the bombers got back to their base, the steel cylinders were taken from the racks and shipped back to the United States of America, where factories were operating night and day, dismantling the cylinders, separating the dangerous contents into minerals. Touchingly, it was mainly women who did this work. The minerals were then shipped to specialists in remote areas. It was their business to put them into the ground, to hide them cleverly, so they would never hurt anybody ever again.

Yep, agreed. Or like 3.5.

Have to say... I've missed fantasy, and I'm really enjoying this so far, just around 25% into Prince of Thorns though... love this dark version of a "hero"

Stephen King: Insomnia

Again.

Probably about the 5th time. I just love this story.

Steven Pacey that narrates The Blade Itself's audiobook is really quite excellent. The amount of voices he can do is incredible. Adds a whole other layer of enjoyment.
