His plan is for Stormlight Archive to be 10 novels with a multitude of short stories and novellas between the main novels.

Have you read any of his other work?

Yep. I've read Mistborn - possibly my favourite fantasy series - and some others. His books from The Wheel of Time too, obviously.

Weird thing from The Stormlight Archive: the hero, after cataclysmic events, returns to his home village, and against all odds, his family is alive and well. I thought that was against fantasy rules.

He writes such great books!

Have you given Powdermage by Brian McClellan a read? If not, I highly recommend it. He learned a lot from Branderson and I'd say he's just as good -- if not better.

If you are looking for an intriguing case study and a business book that reads like a thriller, then this is the book for you. Loved every moment of the book!

Quite sad to be commenting in here without the advice of old Faanie.

I have just finished the Expanse series (waiting for the next book to be finished) and The Bobaverse series.
Busy with The subtle art of not giving a F%!k by Mark Manson.

Its great, just the perfect balance of nihilism and humour.
Going to attack some fantasy next - its been a while and need something new.

Based on this thread either: Mistborn series, Wheel of time or one of the Fiest books I haven't read yet.

Currently it would be Perlmann's Silence by Pascal Mercier.
I must say his best work has been "Night Train to Lisbon" also another brilliant read.

Listening in my car, I often find myself having to restart the chapter because my mind just goes somewhere else and I lose track. Abandoned Dune because of this.

But this new audio was different. Completely pulls you in and keeps you there.

Thanks for that recommendation.
Dune is a poor audiobook to measure all audio books with. It "reads" very badly.

There are some brilliant ones though and I think its its own art form in many ways. A Song of Ice and Fire is probably one of the best if you want to compare - Roy Doltrice is amazing and made something like 150 unique voices.

I'm halfway through the 1st expanse book, it's incredibly engrossing. Also started Bobiverse #1 on audible.

Yeah, would not have known the Bob if not for Fanie. The wife is busy with the last in the series.

At this stage we only do audio books and we share an account. I needed a change of pace from the normal fantasy type stuff and occasionally try and get something more to my wife's genre preference.

As such started with "Little Fires Everywhere" by Celeste Ng. I'm halfway through and really enjoying it - and the voice actor is incredible.

Before this I listened to "Dawn of Wonder" Book 1 by Jonathan Renshaw. Back to the fantasy genre with a more medieval age feel. Well worth a listen too.

Listening to Shades of Grey by Jasper Fford. Enjoying it, and think I might try his Next Thursday series, the premise looks interesting.

Reviews seem to say a familiarity with previous Commonwealth books is required. How you finding it?

This novel is the first of a two part sequel to the Commonwealth series (Pandora’s Star and Judas Unchained) and the Void trilogy. I read these five novels (about 4,000 pages worth) several years ago and it took me a little time to become re-familiar with the underlying story and landscape. Do not let anyone tell you that this novel can be appreciated as a stand-alone work; don’t even try it. The world that Hamilton has created cannot possibly be appreciated by starting in the middle of the story.

Great. I am not sure if I should continue with Book 2 or go back to the beginning.

His "The Big Over Easy" is good fun, too.

The audiobooks worth it?

It is nice to see that my old boet is still thought of on these pages. I happened upon my broadband and my brother's popularity here a little while after his passing (I am referring here to the legend that is Faniebraai). There was much solace to be found in these pages, even though at times the screen became too blurry to read.

I have always been an avid reader. I guess that was one of things I had in common with Fanie. Although I am not much of a fantasy reader, but at least we had a shared love for Stephen King :) I am currently reading, 12 rules for life by Jordan Peterson.
