It is nice to see that my old boet is still thought of on these pages. I happened upon my broadband and my brother's popularity here a little while after his passing (I am referring here to the legend that is Faniebraai). There was much solace to be found in these pages, even though at times the screen became too blurry to read.

I have always been an avid reader. I guess that was one of things I had in common with Fanie. Although I am not much of a fantasy reader, but at least we had a shared love for Stephen King :) I am currently reading, 12 rules for life by Jordan Peterson.
Welcome !

Please share your thoughts when you are done - I think a few of us have read this as well.

Well, like James Joyce said: "Life is too short to read bad books".

Put it down and read something else : )
The issue was that a number of people suggested to start at the beginning of the Commonwealth Saga.

I am going to skip it as the Wiki states "This was his least well received book critically.
....it is not integral to the storyline of those novels."

Just started the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson.

Off to a great start, really liking the universe he has created.

I'm ripping through the whole of Dean Koontz's catalogue, in alphabetical order.
I had no idea he wrote scifi as a young writer... pretty cool

Dean Koontz is mostly a watered down Stephen King. Personally I find that Koontz lacks depth. Stephen King is the master of this art. Dean Koontz makes for light reading I suppose. Certainly entertaining enough. Read a couple of his books, about five.

I have read most of Stephen King's work as well. I do prefer him to Koontz but I am enjoying these too.

I used to really enjoy Koontz, but I find his more recent ones to be 'dog, man, woman, nebulous god-presence and the triumph of good over evil'.

Still dig him, but it's become a bit formulaic. He has written a metric ****-ton of books though.

Yes, I love SK have read most of his books. Used to be my favorite author, but he got overtaken by Ian McEwan about two years ago. It was a natural ascension, they both deal in the macabre of sorts. I am actually not a big sci-fi fan. I think that is also why I'm not a big fan of Koontz. Always leaned more towards horror, hence the reason King appealed more to me.

Yes that is exactly what I mean. Lacks depth.

Was? I still think he is a master of the craft. Although I must admit, I have not read any of his new books. The latest book I have read was Joyland and 11/22/63. And those were pretty good. But now that I think about it, I do have Doctor Sleep at home. I started reading that a while ago and put it down after the first three chapters. Just didn't grab me. Which was disappointing since The Shining was one of my favorites. Perhaps his talent is fading. Must be all the liberalism (haha), but it doesn't take away from everything he produced, so I would definitely still consider him a master in the craft :)
