what, with my words of radiance comment? :D

I think it could be that the i've read a lot of mediocre books lately, and I really liked this...

i should actually remove the scores, because they aren't supposed to be what a think about the book, more an indication what I think of it in terms of the others around it... :)

Jaysus...this guy is really slow today.

Unless that line is from a later book...I read them all together so maybe doing you a disservice there, Fanie.

Why do you score them like that? Why not just give it a score out of 10 as a normal rating?

So I'm busy reading The Northen Lights by Philip Pullman
I am enjoying it as much this time round as I did the first time I read it, Pullman is really a fantastic writer.
One of my favorite fantasy series ever

Re Fanie's Scoring system. I think it works that way. It is a scoring system on the amount of enjoyment he got out of the books. That way he can actually score a 10 because that is the most enjoyment he has ever gotten from a book. If something comes along that tops Words of Radiance, then WoR's score can be dropped to a 9.5 and usurped by the newcomer.

In a traditional scoring system, you can never truly give 10/10. Because you leave no room for the next best thing. So 9 becomes the new 10. And 9.5 becomes the truly brilliant. But 10 remains as infinity, or light speed; Just a theoretical maximum that you aren't actually supposed to touch.

But then again, I am probably reading too much into it.

No, you are absolutely right, that's the way I see it... maybe the number themselves is just a bit deceiving... should be more of a ladder system really... top is best ever... bottom is worst... that's what I was actually trying to achieve...

Too bad insecure religious types killed off the movie series.

Yes, but it wasn't really suited for movie anyway. They are busy making a TV series now and I think it will be much better, it's a much better format for these epic fantasy stories.

I am reading nothing at the moment, watching no series, too bloody busy. Wait, read a few pages from random Asterix and tintin when I get a moment.

I thought the golden compass was a fair representation of the book. TV series risk cancellation far more than films too

The movie was good, especially the visual effects but they did change a few things and left a lot out from the book (including the ending) and watered it down quite a bit.

Finished Ready Player One audio yesterday. Wil Wheaton does a really excellent job of reading it.

The book itself is no classic. Just typical YA fare with the usual plot replaced with excessive 80s tech, gaming and movie references. All in all a good read of you have nothing better lined up but not much better than average imo. May appeal to gaming geeks which is probably where it is aimed.

Agreed
Unless you an 80's fanboy you won't enjoy this.

Did your audio include music tracks from that era?
